The Big ideas and summary of why these items are essential to enhanced and active learning and reading.

Looking at the deeper meaning of Narrative text with a concentrated focus on discovering morals and symbolism. Ideally realizing that the stories are about us and our society, and challenging us as readers to explore our morals and values. The characters and settings are tools the author uses to challenge you.

We are taking a deeper look at Symbolism in Narrative reading and writing. You as a reader want to look past simply the words and be able to get deeper meaning from text. In Rebound, the wheel chair is symbolic of many things that could include racism and sexism. David is symbolic of anyone who is perceived as different from the "norm"

We continued to chat about Symbolism and by extension using it to evaluate text and ultimately ourselves and our society. As well we talked about the little hinges that impact our pursuit of goals.

Visualization is a critical skill to becoming an Active Reader. As a reader you should construct a movie in your mind of the events going on in the text. Your visualization should go beyond the basic visuals the authors provides and should fill in the gaps and enhance the characters and setting of the story.

Reading Challenging Material: We have spent time developing tools to support the reading of difficult and challenging material. It is crucial to realize the process is active. You need to have your scrap book, dictionary, and search engine handy to support your reading.

The keys are realizing you have to read the passage multiple times. Each time you want to have "reason" for rereading. i.e. you are looking at vocabulary or unknown examples, and discovering main ideas and supporting evidence.

Once you have actively gone through the process of reading you will be equipped to discus and answer questions.

Jot notes are about being precise and to the point. One jot note should be enough to “trigger” all the details of the passage (similar to our imagery assignment). Being able to take effective jot notes is a valuable literacy skill to comprehension and understanding.

Imagery is taking an object from the text that is of minimal importance and visualizing and sketching it into greater detail (Sean’s Roller Blades as an example). Thus, you recall the vivid image and trigger the text and story. It is related to visualization but the two are different. Visualization often involves creating “movies” of places and things that are not mentioned and are solely part of the reader’s imagination. Imagery is taking an item that is mentioned directly and adding detail to it.

The Venn Diagram: Add a third person to your Venn Diagram, the character can be real or fictional, ideally we want to highlight the characteristics we all share. All of us sharing multiple characteristics will demonstrate that we learn about who we are from David, and knowing David’s complexity reveals our own complexity, tapping into our lessons on perspective we can make the intellectual leap that indeed all people are complex, and thus we can appreciate and be more empathetic to the people around us. Again reiterating the power of Narrative.

We are ready to begin the editing stage of our narrative writing. 1^st you will need to find an editing partner, perhaps somebody who is not your “best” friend. Friends tend to be less critical and you want valuable editing. Editing is a difficult skill. The new and developing skill in this task is the editing. You as an editor need to have a clear focus and outline of what you are looking for as you edit. Thus you should read through the text a multiple of times, each time looking for different things. Trying to edit for “everything” in one reading is not effective editing.

Reading strategy “empathy” The dictionary definition is: understanding of another’s feelings.

As a reader we want to go beyond understanding it, but feeling it. Understanding doesn’t always lead to appreciating and emotional attachment. We want to feel what the characters are feeling. As an example when David talks about having shutters of feeling zapping through his legs, we as readers want to feel the same thing. Taking our mind on a trip and escaping our realities to become another.

This type of empathy will lead to greater understanding of what others go through. This understanding and appreciation of emotion should make us more aware and concerned for the people around us in our communities and in our global community.
