We watched the clip on Graduation and the speech questioning how "special" you really are. Watch the clip again and share your comments and engage in some dialogue with your class mates.

In class you seemed to appreciate the lecture BUT would you agree if he was talking to YOU?
If you agree with him then what are you going to do to become special.
Yes, i would agree with him. He i speaking the truth. This generation is filled with people that are taught to be encouraged & to not be able to do anything on there own. Before, parents would blame the child for getting a bad mark, now all the do is blame it on the teacher. Come On people! Yes all of us are different, but come on were not special. Everyone should be equal in this world, but since money is a big part of the world now, everything is different. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if there was no money in this world. Just as he said, we all have been pampered & everything is being spoon fed right to us, we all need to learn how to do it on our own. We need to be more independed.

If we are all the same then how come we dont do everything the same? if we are different how are we all not special. before you wacthed this video if someone told you (not a teacher but a student) aren't special would you agrue back. Me and Sana tried it out on someone and she argued back saying she is special

ReplyDeleteto be special you would have to do something like MLK did or what mahatma ghandi did fight for freedom people like lebron james is not special they are just people which have a talent so dont get mistaken someone that is special is someone that helped the world.
But the whole point is to stick to what you believe in like MLK or Ghandi

ReplyDeletei think that i would still agree even if he was talking to me because this is very true, and its something different from what other teachers would say, and give false motivation and say that you will go far, and that we are the best.
ReplyDeletebut what he says is what should be said. he has made me think differently, and he makes good points. i think he is wise. he says that if we are one in a million, then there's about 7000 me's. i think he makes a good point, and he backs up his statement of how you are not special, and u either are the best or you're not.
i think i can be special by doing something that changes the world, and do what not many people do. i want to do something like software engineering. that different, and new.
something almost everyone does is business.
everyone wants to be an accountant or a lawyer.
but theres also lots of competition in that field because theres so many that want to do something the same old thing.

I still do agree even if he was talking to me. I think I can take it in and turn it into something special for me. If I think I am special or someone else thinks I'm special they would have thought I did something special which I did not so I am not so special. And I happy to say someone has finally stated that.
ReplyDeleteSpecial people are like Mlk or Mahatma Gandhi they fought for something no one thought could have been done. Not people who scored a 100% on a test. People who are special doesn’t mean they changed the world.

DeleteI think that we all have to realize where not special, and with that mentality we can push ourselves to do better in anything we want to do good in. We have always been taught to think that were special and that we should always get what we want because we are special, thats how we think. We need to realize that we arent and that we can do things that will make us truely special to others.
ReplyDeleteIn high school, theres a stereotype that are many groups of people that think they are special for a certain thing they do, there are jocks who only play sports and have high confidence but fail every single class. But these people probably arent even like that, they act that way to be apart of a social group.
But the truth is everyone is completely different from eachother. The brain is way more complex than that.
In Beaumonde, we all get treated like we are special, we all once got a theme of the month award and its kinda stupid cause it makes us think we cant do better.
i agree with that and this relates to what he says if everyone got trophies the value of a trophy would go away. Yes the certificate makes us do better because it motivates us but the certificate now has the SAME VALUE OF A GOLD STAR STICKER!!!!!

DeleteThe question I thought of was if you're not special, I'm not special, then who is? What does it take it take to be special? I would still agree if he was talking to me, because I undertand that itsd a form of motivation and has a deeper understanding.
ReplyDeleteI guess for me to be special I have to be/do something completly different. Nothing nobody has ever seen or done before. I'm just not sure what.
my opinion is in being different isnt doing something that no one has ever done before but go the opposite of others ex. 9/11 will and his father decided to go down rather then going up along with the crowd. Special to me means taking a risk and seeing where you will reach and then afterwards everyone is like WOW!

He is very special because he is going to walk across Niagara Falls he is going the opposite way others are running away from the idea of walking but yet hes gonna walk on a ROPE! He is also very special because as you said he is doin something that no one has done before...which one do you think makes him most special that no one else did it or that everyone decided not to go big and he did ? do these to options seem the same to you or different ??
DeleteThis speach is a true speach that most of us would agree because in this generation we are not "special" we're just ordinary people with a ordinary life. If this person said this speach in my gradution, I wouldn't be mad at whoever said it but be thankful that he/she has told us that we aren't as special as we think we are. Once one persons claims or been told he/she is special, then other people are what? Not special? Ordinary people?
ReplyDeleteYes I totally agree with what he said. In order to be special you have to be different that’s the definition of being special: Better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual. His statement is very true and very powerful but during my graduation I wouldn’t want to hear a speech like this. Graduation is a very special day; you want to hear the positives things throughout the year not the negatives. I Know it is important to give a speech like this so people will know the truth but in my opinion that speech shouldn’t be given at grad. There is always a time and place to give and do something unfortunately he chose the wrong time. If he was talking to me I wouldn’t mind because again he made a true and strong point and my opinion is that we all need to know that we all need to be prepared for further in the future .Things won’t be as easy, you need to keep stuff in mind ex. He said about how to always read further in the future it won’t be anything easy, it will be big vocab. Step’s will be token, legs will be broken but just remember some important things that you need because it will come handy in life. I wouldn’t mind if he was talking to me but I wouldn’t like it if I was during my graduation
ReplyDeleteeven if i was at the graduation ceremony, i would still agree.Like there is 7 bilion people in the world, if we all are special,then no ones special.everybodies diverse in diferent ways.people always think they are amazing, center peace or an idol.i always try to explain these poeple that you are nothing special. im now happy that someone stated this.it is very true, i dont think anyone would disagree,or should disagree.
ReplyDeleteI think that to beome something special, you have to do your own thing.say you want to become a doctor, then you might take different steps to reach your goal. for eg. if you become a life gaurd to become a doctor, than you will be a better doctor than the standard person that will go through college or university only.Also do your own thing.following others wont make you different or special.another eg. is we all fall down. they could have gone up, like all the others, or they could have gone there own way, which they did and survived. the outcome was a miracle, so they are special because they are one of the few that survived.
if he was telling this speech to me at my graduation at first i would be like that was a odd speech but i wouldnt say anything since he would be my principle (or who ever he is). though i still agree with him. we on oour own islands think we are special when we get rewarded with something or complimented by doing something but in reality we arent that special because anyone can get that reward. he is trying to say that we have to be special in a way that people think we are special. " you dont have to be alive on earth to live 100 years, just being in peoples thoughts for years could keep you alive and remebered. do something that the world could remember and leave a mark in people hearts and on the earth." also actions speak louder than words. you dont have to be special so eveyyone would recongnize you as a special person (impress someone so they callyou special) but just being special inside yourself is a big thing too. dont be a hypocrite and just say word that sound strong and great when you say them but top them off with action that can proove your words. this principles speech was pretty motavating if you take it positivly. hes that you cant always stay on your wonerfull dreamy island. if u want to make dreams come true the first thing you have to do is WAKE UP!
ReplyDeleteEven if he was talking to me I wouldn't disagree even than. I agree with what he says in the video. He isn't trying to say that we are not perfect. He's just trying to prove that everyone is not born special you have to make yourself special. You can make yourself special by doing anything unique and making it memorable. For me special means like being unique. It's kind of like how he said if everyone gets a trophy then theres no point of the trophy,right? Because then it has no value. People only want trophies to take pictures with them and show them off so they can say that I am special. But does having a trophy make you any special? I don't think so. It's the same thing for being special, if everyone was special then there would be really no point of being special. You are not born special, you make yourself special.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your last sentence. You said having a trophy doesn't make you special. So would you still want and work hard to be special if there wasn't an award for it?

Deleteif that speech was ever given to me at first i would hes wrong.but when i thinkabout he is actually right trophy are special because only one person gets it if everyone got a trophy it won't special because everyone has one.but i think he is kinda wrong to because every one has something there good or "special" at its just depends on if they have discovered it or not.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone is special, because everyone has different live's, all their live's are never the same between 2 people or even more. Everyone has their own life, you can't step into someone's shoes and act like you've had a life like that before, because everyone is different and everyone is special.
ReplyDeleteI would still agree about us not being "special" because he justified it he didnt just say you're not special if he did that i wouldn't agree i would start booing him and probably get angry but he justified that we aren't special with reasoning and that we have to work hard to be special and keep reading.

I agree with what he is saying because the word special is used so carelessly nowadays that it is becoming meaningless if everyone keeps on being told that. However in order to be special you have to be different from the people around you.

If we were all special the meaning of special would go to waste. For once someone talks about reality and the truth. The meaning of special for me is that its a person who does things different and thinks differently its what we want to do with are lifes and if you want to do better in anything push your self dont follow others everyone thinks there special in some way or the other for exapmle like a group of people who think that are special and people act a certain way to be liked or just to join that certain group just because you might do the same things as a person doesnt mean your the same because your not everyone is different have there will never be a person thats the same as you might have things in common but not all things for example your best friend you might share alot of things in common but your both different you share differnt things but thats what makes you best friends might have your problems because your different but that shouldnt stop you from doing what you want to do if your best friend really was ture they would be beside you for everything you do.

ReplyDeleteI rally just think this because as he said 7,000 people in the world are partially like you.If he used that he was doing it for that 7,000 to tell them of what they think is special may not be special.
Amelia Earhart she was the first woman to fly around the world. Really back in that time they were just starting to stop the other women's right's for alot of things. She had made it possible for the women to get those rights engraved into the rules.
I would still agree on what he is saying ven though he was talking to me. In order to be "special" we need to be different than other people. As he said in his speech we have always been trained to think we are special we have always been pampered and got what ever we desired.

I do agree with him, on some points. Maybe it's because I might be self centred but him saying or well his defenition of special isn't really in correspondance with my defenition. I agree with him on "If everyone is special, no one is" because the dictionary meaning is "of a distinct or particular kind or character" which means there can actually only be one special. "You either are, or you aren't".
ReplyDeleteHe states that "In our unspoken but not so subtle Darwinian competition with springs I think from our fear of our own insignificance" I think it's true, that inside we're all just as insecure as that grade 2 loser. We're all in a race to prove ourselves to eachother, whether you agree or disagree.
He said "Get out go out and get something done" and I agree because Life Law Number 5 (I think) from Teen Life Stratagies is called "Life Rewards Action". Really in all that's whats gonna get you to where you want in life. Your actions and choices got you to where you are, and where your gonna be and thus you can relate it back to the debate in class about "Life Stratagies for Teens" about success and failure. That if you want something in life you show it. If you want something really bad in life but you don't do anything about it, then do you REALLY want it? Its like the saying "If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it actually make a sound?"
And lastly he said "Read, Read, Read" because like we said in class "Wisdom comes from reading" and happiness comes from wisdom, therefor if you want to be truely happy then READ. And one of the most sucessful people (in my defenition of success)stated- "Leaders are defenitely READERS"-Kevin Trudeau
I think the title is very missleading. It makes the watcher think that this is a very unreasonable teacher. The true message is that he is saying that they arent special, because everyone is. Frankly i would love for my teacher to tell us that we arent special because i wold rather the truth then to be living a lie.
