  1. Well since this is true i think since its still a rule of no chewing gum people are gonna abuse this finding when they chew gum they c an say "I'm Becoming Smarter" or something like that and there will be a big fuss and if they allow this people will go back to chewing gum then putting it either under desks or in peoples lockers or hair like kids and that'll become a big fuss and detention and possibility suspensions will be given which isn't good its supposed to make you smarter not inevitably make you dumber

    1. i agree with what you said.
just because you're chewing gum, it doesnt mean that you are being smarter, and you arent making "wiser decisions".
people will miss use chewing gum, and will do what thamil listed.

  2. Since I don't chew gum I really don't know, but based on all the information they searched up I gotta beleive it. My brother chews a lot of gum he seems to have better grades than me. But, I don't think it's true since the studies have been conducted recently. I have nothing else to say on the topic.

    1. Well Couldn't It Just Be That Your Brother Got Extra Help And Not The Chewing Gum Part?

    2. do you think that if you have gum your marks will get higher or will it take some time.

      Delete
    3. My brother is too "smart" to ask for help

      Delete
    4. could it be that the gum isnt whats making him smart, its just studying, and being focused?

      Delete
  3. i find this an interesting article i have never thought that gum was good and it will help your studies it is amazing how gum works as a knowledge booster too bad we can not have gum at school because the teacher thinks we will throw the gum on the ground. so if we have gum we would have less cravings and we might get smart in other subjects.

    1. The article didn't say it improves your knowledge , the article states it increases your chances of scoring higher.

    2. i agree with tabish.
its not a complete guarantee that you will do better.

  4. I think that after reading this, schools should allow gum chewing because there are more positives than negative impact when you use it at school. Sure it will get caught under desks on floors and it will be messy and many will liter, but our school wants our school to be successful right so then we should use gum. As the article said it improves 3 percent more of your marks than before. So I think it will be allowed soon. It helps with your diet, studies less calories taken in every day etc.

    1. Do you think being healthy ties in with your education, personality and you as a person overall? Since you did mention diets and such. I thought there were an equal amount of positives and negatives, make a list of pros and cons if you can.

      Delete
    2. but in our schools case it is because the teachers think we will throw the gum on the school grounds and it will make people shoes sticky if we show this article will the teacher accept us to chew gum.

      Delete
    3. @ tabish
      it can.
for example if you eat a good and healthy breakfast, you can do better in school.
the food can make you more focused.

  5. I myself chew gum in class and i cant say I've gotten any smarter... it may just be something you keep you active with and help you pay attention in class but it sure doesn't seem to make you smarter.

    1. Maybe you just dont relize it because in the article it did say only 3% higher.

    2. @ janat
i think thats what it is.
i think the tests that we get dont make a big difference in grades.

it could be that stanley could focus better, or find the answers faster.
it doesnt necessarily have to be your overall mark.

      Delete
  6. I agree with this article because it makes sense.Gum could make you get a higher mark then its better for students.Schools should allow gum because theys an acedmic result but at the same tuime schools wont becauise people throw away gum on the floor or under desks ,which i think is the reason. At the same time in the article the result was only 3% higher but its still a change.Alos its better for having a healty diet.

    1. i agree with the more focused part. i am much more calm and focused when i have gum.
but doesnt gum also cause teeth problems?

  7. Chewing gum has been disallowed for a long time in schools but here is a advatage but now we know it seems schools should be encouraging their students to chew gum, after reading this about it boosting their performance in tests.

Although it can be taken advatage by people as people can put it in places where they should not be.

But the thing that i do not get is that did they consider the posibillity that the group of students that were given gum were smarter at the first place?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. True but I think they were chosing the people randomly because how would the scienctist know whos samrt between the people in the first place?

      Delete
    2. i think that the students were already really smart, and that maybe the tests was on subjects that they could preform good in.

      Delete
    3. @malav how do they know they could all perform perfect when we all think and forget differently?

    4. @ rohan
i dont get what you are trying to say.

  8. from reading the article i think gum should be allowed.i just thought gum was for non-beneficial purposes. like how playing video games for too long is not healthy for your eyes. i never really thought about how good it could be for us. like improving test scores.this is like sleeping.i never knew both could improve test scores. so now i think gum should be allowed

    1. what about the fact that people could miss use gum? couldnt people fool around and do things like thamil listed? ( put gum under desks, in hair, lockers, etc...)

    2. that is true.but it still happens any way. people still do that. but you cant prevent it either way

  9. I found this article interesting. I never knew it does all this, I just thought of it as something to chew on. I chew a lot but it doesn't seem like I've received better marks than before.

    1. you probably havent noticed it because 3% didnt make a huge difference in the tests we get.

it could also depend on the subject of interest.

      Delete
    2. Maybe, maybe it's just that we haven't noticed it because it's not much of a difference but still I don't really agree with this statement. I don't think it makes you smarter or boost your marks. Also I kinda agree with it making you have less craving of food but at the same time you can also be hungry because I eat gum in the morning and for all the 4 periods in the morning I chew gum but then I start to get hungry it's true it does kinda stop me from wanting to eat something sweet or any type of food but then again I always get hungry when I chew gum.

      Delete
  10. i agree with this article because some students don't eat properlywith afects your study but when you chew gum your body thinks your eating somthing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. but doesnt that also starve your body?

what about the parts about boosting your marks? do you agree with that?

      Delete
  11. i think that chewing gun could help you,
but i think its just the students.
the students may be very intelligent, and the gun didnt have an effect.

i do agree with the fact that gum makes you more quiet.
when i chew gun, i am much more quiet, and sometimes more focus.

but, i dont get the part that gum makes you have less cravings for food.
i get bigger cravings for food when i chew gum.
    and doesnt gum contain calories?

    ReplyDelete
  12. it kind of hard tyo believe that chewing gum can boost you marks. chewing gum does seem to have a few good points:
~improves you marks (by 3 percent)
    ~keeps you active (mentally)

i chew gum sometimes and i had no difference in my marks, so i dont aghree with this article.

    ReplyDelete

    1. it doesnt say it will always improve your marks by 3%.
      it can.

      Delete
    2. and like ive said, maybe you didnt notice it.

      maybe you preformed better/faster.

      Delete
    3. 3% increase is a small amount for students on a daily basis.

but when it comes to Graduation awards and calculating top percentages the top 7-10 students are never more then 1.5 % apart.

So the extra 3% could make you a landslide winner.

      Delete
    4. ya malav is right there is a chance you caan improve it will not happen to everyone

      Delete
  13. like tabish said in aqib's comment,
the article didnt say that gum would make you smarter, it gives you a better chance of scoring higher.

and so, technically gum doesnt make you smarter.
it can make you more focused, and more calm.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. also you have to remember that you have a chance to do better it will not happen to everyone

  14. the tests we get arent very long.
what if 3% didnt matter in that test?
for example: a test or quiz is out of 10.
    10/10 is 100%.
    but 9/10 is 90%.
you really cant see the 3% difference.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. but in other tests that are longer, you can see the difference, and that small difference could really matter.

      Delete
    2. ya and also what mr.cheney said somtimes 3%is alot and i agree with that

  15. Gum may be good for people who are already healthy, it might help stop your cravings, but like everything now a days there is always a negative. Gum contains aspartame, aspartame is an artificial sweetener and has many dangers in everyones health. Also diet coke and other sugar-free things contain aspartame.

  16. Great Health Find.

We will be taking up this article and topic in the morning.

  17. What I have learned is that gum chewing is not what people think. It's much different. Gum chewing is good for you. It has some good affect such as, gain more memory, learning improvement, and carving of food. It does also have its negative like cavities and many more but but we can handle that by doing the right things.

What I have read in sugar-free gum packet that it still contains sugar. It's NOT 100% sugar free. My question is why don't they make it 100% sugar-free?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. it is sugar free. there is just something arteficial in there that swetens it

      Delete
    2. If they make it 100% sugar free people won't like the taste as much and their sales would probably drop. Or they would have to replace the sugar with some chemical that would most likely turn out to be worse than the sugar itself.

      Delete
    3. we can handle that by doing the right things i do not understand what the right thing is

      Delete
    4. sugar is one of the main things that make people like the taste of gum.
and if its sugar free, itll have aspartame.

i think i forgot my raptors thing at school. i have the 2 sheets but i think the small sheet is at school. also,is that sheet manditory?

  19. I chew gum in class a lot and I never noticed a change in my work and my memory, so I disagree with this statement because coming from me (and many others in this class) there is not much of a difference

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Even if you disagree with the statement, do you disagree with the whole idea of actually chewing gum in class?

      Delete
    2. ya if you do not improve there is someone in the the class that will improve.

      Delete
    3. Well, there might be a difference on other students. Other students might focus more better while chewing gum and some may not. Do you agree that we should be chewing gum in class? Do you think when it comes to gum there is responsibility? Do you think that gum is good for our health? And do you agree it helps you preform better on tests and homework?

      Delete
  20. the article i just read about chewing gum i disagree and agree because when i chew gum i sometimes get distracting but i seem to do better once in awhile. i don't mostly chew gum all the time and what Donna was talking about aspartame they try to advertise sugar free gum so we think its better to chew instead of regular gum and i don't know if this is a fact or not i heard that doctors recommend sugar free gum to there patients.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not really sure of what I think of chewing gum. I chew gum a lot and as Shelby said i have never noticed a change in my work or in memory. But in some cases some people do focus better when they are chewing gum

I can compare gum with music. Some people focus and study better when their playing loud music and some people don't. For example me, I hate when there's noise or music when i am trying to do homework or read or study its so annoying i cant focus. And I tend to get distracted very easily so I also hate hen people talk when I'm doing something.

  22. I think chewing gum in class is fine because it doesn't really fuel a disadvantage. Gum helps keep some people focused, fights cravings and know helps our academic performance! So we see here that it helps us both mentally and physically. Even if there wasn't this newly found academic advantage, I would still say yes to gum because there is no clear disadvantage but many advantages. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with what you are saying Nicole, that is true there's not really any disadvantages except for the fact that its not sugar-free. For me if i chew gum it doesn't help fight the craving for food for me because I like to eat food :D.

      Delete
    2. I'm sure you can always find gum with sugar in it but thanks.

  23. As a teacher I am suppose to say NO to gum, but I have always turned a blind eye because I realized it doesn't have a negative impact on student success.

As a teacher it becomes an issue that you turn into a nag about but in the end if you accomplish it how dies it make your classroom better.

You might contend that no chewing gum is just an old rule that nobody has outright challenged in decades.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Even thought there are a lot of comments that say no to gum, I still stand by it PROUDLY.

Gum can make you distracted, but most of the time it helps people concentrate. Yes it can be bad for you, but it can help you with your work.

    1. Gum is bad for your health, it may somehow help your brain and stop your cravings (which i highly doubt due to my opinion on the resource, a CNN news article; I find it biased..) and health should be put before school work performance.

    2. @ olga
i agree with the fact that it helps people concentrate. when i chew gum, i am more calm, and focused.

that could be the reason that they scored higher.
    the students had better attention.
