Hey Team
We went and saw a live performance of the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet (everyone was well dressed and represented BHJMS with class and dignity)
1. What did you think of the play?
2. What age is Juliet in the Play
3. Were some scenes were over the top? Are you Okay with it?
4. How believable is the story and plot?
Post your response and engage in dialogue with 2 other students.
You should have 1 post to answer the questions and minimum of 6 posts in conversation.
1)the play was amazing but where i was sitting i dont know if it was just me i couldnt hear them problem but the facial emotions i would of known what was going on.
ReplyDelete2)i think Juliet was 14 years of age for me i think it was pretty young to get married but back then it must of been 14 and older.
3)some scenes were over the top and i think some people liked it because of there reactions for me a play is a play and if you got to do it to make it realistic then do it as long no one gets hurt i was good with the scenes.
4)i think the play was believable because of the lighting they had day the lights turn on night it turns down and when they wanted to focus on a person they would only put the light on that person it was awesome the plot of the story was gud to i could tell what was the situation and the solution etc.
true because the actors were professional and it didnt matter if you didnt know old english language. I think that back then it was 14 year old girls with 30 year old men, because those are the years that the genders are mentally mature... (maybe that was even before the 1600's)
Deletei don't think it 14 year old girls with guys in there 30's i think it is 14 year old girls with 15,17,16 year old guys like romeo and juliet.
Deletei agree with you icouldn't hear them properly
DeleteAt Points it was exciting then boring but it was pretty good because they were amazing actors
DeleteI disagree with the lighting. I think that they could of done a better job with that. It was a bit confusing to tell were the moon was supposed to be.
DeleteLike we talked in class the "over the top" parts some people take it in as "humor" because people joke about it outside of class.
DeleteIf Shakespeare was in this Century and was still writing, would he have changed his language so it would fit in with the modern days?
DeleteThe play was really entertaining. The actors were on piont. Sometimes, I just couldn't make out what they were saying.
ReplyDeleteJuliet was 14 years. It seemed like she was alot older but it was normal back then.
Some scenes were over the top like the death scene at the end. I think it was okay beause as actors they should exagorate it but they didn't push it too much.
I don't beleive the story/ plot is very beleivable. Maybe in their time, but definetly not today. I don't think anyone falls that madly in love within a few days. All and all it was very entertaining and amazing overall!
What do you think about the parts where juliet's parents were telling her what to do, and when her father was yelling at her to get married to another person?
DeleteI think that was more realistic than the death scene because her dad was full of rage. What was your most over the top scene?
DeleteI liked that scene too, it was realistic then and now, also the scene where the maid and mother were encouraging her to find a husband it made sense at that time.
Deleteme too that scene was realistic but the only seen that seem unrealistic to me when juliet pretended to die,her mother was,'t really crying like she actually lost some one
Deletewell she was actually in shock mode that makes it even more realistic in that situation crying ends up happening after when they think of the good times...
Delete@Donna where they really crying
Delete@Nicole i agree with you but when Juliet was going to kill her self or kill herself i think they could of done it better
Deleteapparently the scenes that were realistic are the most interesting and engaging to watch and i agree with Donna about Juliet's mother and maid
DeleteNicole, I agree the death scene had more words then action. They should have put blood to make it look more realistic when she killed herslef.
Delete@Sana I also agree. Juliet's heart was still beating so wouldn't someone realize she was still alive?
Delete@Bubbles @Janat
DeleteI guess they had to use so many words to express what she was thinking. Just seeing Romeo and then stabbing yourself would be kind of weird, plus it made it more dramatic. My favorite scenes were the fighting scenes because of all the action
I agree with Nicole on how believable it is, it's not really possible to fall in love that quickly.
DeleteWhen Juliet stabbed herself I thought it was real quick just like real death real quick there was no long talk or minutes before she died.
Delete@Nicole,Yeah that would be weird but she explained alot more then necessary.I wouldn't have minded a short explanation but she explained too much and i think it kind of killed the scene. She kinda of made it look unrealistic.
DeleteSame I think the actors were very good and professional considering that they are high school students
Delete1- I thought the play was pretty good, the actors were professionals so it made it more enjoyable. I thought the play was pretty stupid in a sense that it wasn't so deep, just young love. After a short time of knowing each other, they commit suicide for one another. Not so realistic but maybe it was at that time.
ReplyDelete2- Again, young love, Juliet was my age, 14 and Romeo was 16. At that time marrying young was acceptable and appropriate.
3- I dont think that the scenes were over the top, there wasn't any fake blood or anything intense to watch but just play fighting, and sure there were some i guess you can call sexual scenes, but it didn't bother me.
4- Of course teens can commit suicide, but commit suicide over a person they have met a week ago? I dont really believe in love at first sight. Or love so strong after a short period. The only part that was believable is the parents' choices for the daughter, they wanted her to marry a guy that they have chosen, a guy that is richer and more intelligent...
i agree only believable part is when the parents' choose a guy that is richer and more intelligent. i agree with this because i think some people might tell there parents they don't wanna mary that person because they love some one else
Deleteyes it was very common back then but still is common now, so i think we can relate to shakespears writing.
Delete@donna u said the whole thing was pretty stupid but back then do u think its stupid still
Delete@Donna and sana i agree are parents expect us to marry some one bold, intelligent, and enough money to raise a family for me i dont think its right because everyone sees differently in someone and u cant marry someone u dont love unless it your religion
Delete@Bubbles, True but parents think like that because they want to make your future as best as they can and all the parents have their own option of how they want their children to marry in the future but sometimes they forget that their kids have their own opinion.
Delete@Donna, I agree with you. Its very unrealistic to end your own life after someone you met a few days ago. Maybe it was because Juliet was so young and sheltered by her parents. When it came to make a choice, she lacked experience.
DeleteI agree with Nicole & Donna with this, why die after 3 days of knowing each other?
Delete@Lisa the whole thing is pretty stupid, i think it wouldnt have been so stupid back then, maybe people really believed in love after a few days.. But now in this generation everyone would find it stupid, well maybe back then they found it stupid to get to know eachother more and wait a couple of years before marrying.
DeleteDo u think they should of put more sets and just not stick with one ?
Delete1.the play was fantastic but i couldn't hear some of the character clearly or understand some of them because they were speaking the old english but overall it was awesome.
ReplyDelete2.juliet is 14 and i think its's a young age to feel that passionate about a guy and get married.
3.i don't think the show was over the top because sometimes i felt that its not that that realistic because as donna said there was no blood etc.
4.i don't think this story is that believable because i don't think that teens can have that passionate feelings about each other specially when they only met a week ago also i don't think they would suicide for each other after just a week of knowing each other.
agreed but i think it could also be not as stupid as it might seem, shakespeare could mean something deeper then what the plot is...every story has a main idea.
Deletei agree but back then i think it would of happen when it was the time for you to get married your parents would find someone for you or they would tell you u have to get married you have look for someone just how they told Juliet
Delete@Donna what do you think the main reason is?
DeleteI think it would of been better with props like blood & fake things like that to make it seem more real.
DeleteI think the fake blood would have changed the mood. The play had an older vibe and I think the blood would have made it a bit childish and less dramatic.
DeleteI agree teens in reality don't fall so hard for each other and will be will to sacrifice their lives for one an another
DeleteI agree too they were quiet and some parts were vulgar but in a way back in the days they were supposed to get married at such a young age and it was a regular thing
DeleteI was okay with the blood. Mrs. Steer told us and warned us about this stuff when ewe were watching the animated version.
Delete1- Personally,I think the play was alright because the actors were really good but i couldn't tell most of the time what was going on or what they were saying. Also if they talking the same way as it was written then why were they dressed in a modern way like the short dress's.I think they talked way too much...before doing anything they would explain instead of just making the scene happening.
ReplyDelete2- Juliet is 14, it's young but in the old days it was normal that they married young girls in those days.
3- I think the scene that was over top was the death scene. Like before dying she gave us a whole lecture that she was going to suicide. Also the way romeo fell was funny.I don't think anyone really dyes like that.
4- I didn't find the story believable because no one falls so deeply in love that easily and then dying for them. But it probably was realistic in Shakespeare's time but not anymore.
i agree i didnt really liked when they had to talk so much but there emotions were great but some scenes it wasnt really realistic
DeleteI couldnt really tell what there emotions were because we couldnt really see their faces. Its because we were on the balcony we missed out on the words and expressions.
DeleteI agree the play was very unrealistic ibecause teens don't fall in love that easily over a short amount of time and then on top of that are willing to loose their life
DeleteDid you feel that it was very awkward when he was doing those actions?
DeleteGreat insight thus far.
ReplyDeleteShout out for Donna and her performance, you have raised to the top of the school in terms of critical thought and analysis the past month or so. Since your riveting speech on the Media and image you have been making great leaps in sharing your insight in class and on the blog.
@Cheney Thank you, i will be continuing to raise the bar high, even in soccer.
ReplyDelete1. I thought the play was well scripted, I liked it, but it was a bit boring, and kind of hard to understand cause they're speaking in Old English.
ReplyDelete2. Juliet was 14
3. Some scenes were over the top but we talked about this in math class, was children this age suppose to feel like this and the answer was yes. So I think this was okay.
4. The story was believable because shakespear is a person who played around with words and writes like this the story was believable because we've talked in math class that, teenagers this age feel that type of way,
Old English is very hard to understand with there 'Thy' & 'Thou' & 'Shall' & 'Wlit'
DeleteI agree, it was difficult to understand at times, that's why I enjoyed the action scenes more.
DeleteYeah, I agree the action scenes were pretty cool, seems really real cause of the things they do.
DeleteI agree the play was well scripted but as Olga said its hard to understand the old english
DeleteThey were wearing the same clothes most of the time do u think they should of changed in few of the sets
Delete#1. I think that the play was very interesting. It was hard to understand at times. I think it was a bit weird to see how a person marries someone after a day of knowing each other. The play was very different. I have known the story from before, but i never thought it would be that long of a play.
ReplyDelete#2. Juliet is 13 turning 14. She died before her 14 birthday.
#3. No i think everything was fine with the play, they didn't show anything bad, but they could of made it better with better props & and better lighting.
#4. Not so believable. Only for the reason of killing themselves for a person that you clam to love after 2 days of knowing that person. It seems too unreal. I understand to die for the person you love, but you must at least know something about that person to love them, other wise it's not true love. Knowing only someones name is not really that important anyway.

Deletethey didnt get married after a day or two, but i agree that they got married too early and took things to the "extreme" by killing each other and getting married.
Deletethey did want to get married early
DeleteI agree I think the whole teenage love then dying for each other is very unrealistic because they barely knew each other yet fell in love
Delete@olga
DeleteDo you mean just met and want to get married or age?
Or perhaps both?
I don't really look at age, my point is they just met & barley know anything about each other, I think you should know something about your spouse.
DeleteI think the play was very intriguing. It especially had a nice flow like how they changed scenes so fast. As many said, Shakespear's language was very hard to understand but since it was a play it wasn't so bad. Knowing someone for a day and thinking they are the love of your life is very unrealistic.
ReplyDeleteJuliet was 14 in the play and Romeo was 17.
No I think everything was fine with me in the play. They were professionals and acted like them too. \for the fighting scene, there was no blood to make it intense but even if there was it would be acceptable.
And there were sexual scenes then again I was fine with.
The play was not so real. The fact that they knew each other for a couple of days and in the play they didn't even show how they learned about each other. And at the end they suicide another. In conclusion, the story, plot were unreal but they was really enjoyable.
knowing the story even before watching the play did make it easier to understand, but i still felt not so "sucked in" to the story.
Deletehow about you?
i agree about the play being a bit unreal. and i agree that romeo met juliet for a few minutes, and started making out. that was very unreal, and disturbing.
I don't have any background knowledge to the story but I was hooked by the powerful acting. I think they said at the end that they worked on this play for about an year.
Deletei thought the play was okay. i didnt like it much. i couldnt hear them for some scenes, and i couldnt understand some of their old English.
ReplyDeletejuliet is 14 in the play.
i didnt post yesterday, or the day before, but during the play, i found all the sexual parts and show of emotion in the play very awkward, and i didnt think that they would put that in the play. there were also younger kids than us, and all of them were laughing.
i agree that this type of content is being used too much in the media, and it is getting natural to a lot of us. i am not okay with this, and i thought that we are too young to be used to this.
this story and plot to me wasnt all that realistic. only because what romeo and juliet did didnt look like something very modern. the video mr cheney posted was a video we watched in ms steer's class. this one is more believable because its modern. another thing is that it doesnt look very realistic about 2 teens killing themselves.
What did you enjoy in the play, overall?
DeleteIt wasn't as loud as we expected it to be. That could use an impprovement because there's no point of going to a play if you have problems hearing them speak.
DeleteI thought that all te parts were the same quality/quantity.
DeleteBut the fighting parts were more interesting because of all the"stunts", but I thought that it was too dramatic like te ending
@ mr cheney
ReplyDeletethe time on the blog is 3 hours back, but when i was deleting a comment from olga's comment, it told me the correct time while asking to delete my comment.
I Posted This Yesterday But Didnt Show Up -.-
ReplyDelete1.The Play Was Good And boring at the same time because i couldnt hear what they were saying but at point i knew what they were gonna say like the part where juliet says "Romeo Romeo Where For Are Thow Romeo" so yeah
2. Shes 14 and Romeo Is 16
3. Like we dicusseed in the class the Sexual parts were and it wasnt comfortable but it was mangable until he bumped into the lady then yea.
4. it wasnt so believable because youl never find the perfect soul mate theyre's always something wrong and even thought that was the marrying age it seemed as if thought they had lve at first sight which wasnt believable then "Dated" for which seemed like 1 week give or take and then suicided cause of that dumb stuff
It would have better if it wasn't so long.It got boring because the play moved at a very slow pace...it kinda got confusing at some parts.I agree people never find perfect soul mates because no one is perfect and if they really loved each other then they would have lived for their love not died-like in Titanic, the guy made the girl promise that she would live for him.
Deletei agree that some parts are boring and werent needed in the play itself. I also agree that it wasnt so believe able, to fall in love that fast
DeleteWell no one would have known, because we weren't in that time period and the people then would have been a lot different then the people now.
Delete@Jan101 yea it was long which lost a lot of interest in people and it was so slow because were used to the fast pace of movies which are sped up a little bit and they acted it out
DeleteThe beginning was really fast. They met, they were in love but when they fought how they had family problems and how they were finding a solution... thats took a while,. But usually plays are 1-2 hours.
Delete1. the play got boring through the middle of it because i couldn't understand what they were saying but overall i enjoyed it and thought the actors were very skilled in what they were doing
ReplyDelete2. Juliet was 14 and Romeo was 16
3.As we talked about in class the sexual parts were very awkward and uncomfortable to watch especially with all the teachers around
4.I don't think the story wasn't very believable because its not realistic that people are willing to take away their life for someone else especially when it comes to teens
So you would say it wouldn't be awkward without the teachers there?
Delete@Stanley I think with the teachers it made it more awkward because you know your not supposed to be watching those types of scenes and so do teachers and when you watch it , i think it sends out the wrong message about you like your actually enjoying it.
DeleteYes I think it would he less awkward if the teachers weren't there because we would be around our peers because around them we are more comfortable and as janat said we know we're not supposed to be seeing those things and being with teachers sends the wrong message
DeleteI think it would of been equally awkward because just seeing things like this is NOT normal.
DeleteYes but the teachers decided this trip, so not our fault if they do think that we're sending wrong messages.
DeleteSo you're are saying that if there were no teachers there you would be comfortable watching it ?
Deletei think everyone had the same problem of it beiung long and boring but if you think bout it back in the day this was the best this was short in there times but were so used to fast pace movies and what not making us lose interest we gained it back when someone was fighting because were so used to it which in a way is understandable but if it was reacted in our time everyone would love it
Delete15+3=18
ReplyDelete_-_=
3x8=11+13
16/16=11-11
total 105 out of 145 numbers left 7,4,9
16/16 is 1 not 0
DeleteLISA WANTS TO COME BACK FOR A RE-MATCH!
DeleteYes she does, and she wins with a score of -3

ReplyDeleteThe play was okay to me but at some times it just lost me because it was just "boring". The "boring parts when all they do is talk to them self and no interaction with each other. Overall its was good.
ReplyDeleteI pretty sure she was 14 years old.
Most of the play was good but only the parts when the guy was doing "wrong stuff" because its just makes you think at a point where did they really do this back then and did the writer really put that there? I'm not to sure if I'm okay with that because I do see on tv people do that so I'm not 100% sure.
I don't really believe in this story because its just like those fairy tales and etc. To be honest it just seems as those movie/play that becomes a big hit because of the entertainment in it.
Would you say that te play was exactly like a fairy tale? Or did it have a bit of realism?
DeleteIt can be a fairy tale because love doesn't happen that fast, but in a different perspective its not because people don't chose to die that fast over someone. I personally do NOT think that dieing was a way out. If I would of been there, i would of just run away. Why? 1.Romeo was banned. 2. Life would of been not so easy but better than dieing.
DeleteYes I agree Romeo and Juliet had another way out but thinking about it there are more benefits than dying than running away. 1. Someone is going to find them two and bring them back, so they are constantly going to be in fear of getting caught. 2.It is going to be harder to live because you have nowhere else to go! On the other hand, if they died they can rest in peace together. 2. Nothing the parents can do now. 3. If you believe in after life then they will be happy forever.
Delete@Wordnerd: How it was dramatic in the end.
Delete@OrangeJuice: Ya but then if they did run away, the story would of been longer and people would lose interest.
Delete@anurag
DeleteWhat about the other parts of the play?
I agree the play was good at times and boring at other times especially at the middle of it
DeleteDo u think the acting of the people was okay?
Delete@Anurag
DeleteYea, but the story would of made more sense & realistic
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@word Nerd: The other parts were okay but like you wouldnt see it in real life.
ReplyDeleteI agree. You wouldn't see this type of "behavior" during our times.
Delete@shelby: Ya. Do you think that they should improve it at points?
ReplyDelete@ anurag If you had the chance to go again but see another play ... would you go and why?
ReplyDelete1. The play was okay but some times I really didn't get the play and I think that they should put more props
ReplyDelete2.14
3.I see that in my everyday life so I got used to it but that's not normal and I think we should be
uncofortable watching it but tthat everyone is used to it they won't
4.Like I said more props so noth that much
@Underdog: It depends. What I mean by that is if it sounds good or the summary seems to be interesting.
ReplyDeleteSo you knew the story about Romeo and Juliet before you saw the play? And you wanted to go because you think it was interesting, right?
ReplyDelete
