We All Fall Down - Hope

We All Fall Down - Hope

We spent time in class today talking about Romanticized media and the inherent ability of humans to find hope and confidence when viewing situations.  It was obvious that we should have hope and confidence in life but also realized that success is not directly related to it and more importantly failure is not the result of not having hope and confidence.  So I asked you:

Is being hopeful and confidant ever a bad thing? Why? provide examples

post your response and comment on 3 other students posts.

  1. Well the situation John and Will are in right now currently is a really bad situation, horrendously bad. And being like John in these type of situations is good because once your confident your calm, your cool, you look good and you feel good (Whomever is watching you will notice) and you can relate this to sports. In soccer as a defender or whatever position you play, confidence is prime. Your taking about 7 or 8 shots a game, you miss them all, you'll feel it inside but don't let it bring you down. Ever. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"- Wayne Gretzky. Back to John and Will if you do have confidence and strive towards your goal little by little you will achieve what you want, this doesn't happen all the time because It doesn't seem like their gonna make it. Or in any situation. But confidence is a good trait to have not to the point you are cocky and become arrogant and ignorant, at that point you will start making mistakes. You shouldn't have to little of it as you become shy, and less open.

    1. But you shouldn't have over confidence as well because then you will get your hopes up if you dont succeed but in this case if they don't succeed than they die. I like how you mentioned the Wayne Gretzky part.

    2. They are not going to succeed because of all the floors they have to go down I don't they are. And that ties in with the media and how all books as a kid had happy ending. You know even Rebound was a book with a happy ending. Like Mr Cheney says trained to think a certain way.

      Delete
    3. Rebound didnt have a happy ending, remember the poll about david being able to walk again or not, it was more people that said no, because we thought logically and not let the medias influences interfere with our thoughts. But in we all fall down, we are letting our happy ending thoughts interfere.

    4. @ tabish
mostly, mostly, the happy endings are for kids
since I think this book would be for teenagers they probably won't have a happy ending cause we can understand the tragedies. But authours still do make happy endings.

  2. As Kelly Clarkson sang: "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" I agree. As Mr.Cheney said failure is not because of hope and confidence than it would help u succeed more than it does make you fail right? But that does not mean to depend on it so much either, because if you depended on your confidence and hope but you fail so bad you would give ur hopes up and will never have hope and confidence again aswell.

    1. i agree with this point Abeeshan the key to confidence lies within the person. You can not change a person unless he wants to make the changes. i think you have to be true to you and build on your self esteem.

    2. its like that saying umhh " you can lead a horse to water but can not make it drink. Depends on you.

      Delete
    3. I agree, but the more you fail it leads to hopelessness or makes you desperate to win,It depends on how much effort is put in each time and if you have confidence in yourself that you can do it then it leads to better results.

  3. I think that it really depends on the situation. In this situation with John and Will it would be very good to have confidence which will really help john to keep calm and safe. But one thing i know is that everything that is exceeded is bad and i would think that too much of confidence would be bad.An example of this would be something as risk taking , lets say you just spent all your life savings on a gamble or anything similar and you have confidence that your going to win but your not necessarily going to win ,and you lose this would be an example of bad confidence.

    1. But not all of us are risk takers what about hopefulness

      Delete
    2. I agree with you and i think that it depends on if it is an opportunity or a risk because a risk is usually bad and an opportunity means a chance so these effects are based on positive or negative effect in a situation

      Delete
  4. I think hope can be worse than confidence. Hope gives you a false assumption that everything will be okay. It also makes you more calm/safe.

Confidence can also be a bad thing. You can be cocky about things because you have so much confidence.

I think hope is worse because it is used more falsely than confidence. I agree with the fact that most movies, books, and other forms of media romanticize things. Because of us being used to this, we have hope that John and Will are going to make it out.
This is like our island and the real world. On our island, we expect that everything will be okay, and that everyone will live happily ever after.
In the real world, that is not true. There isn't always a happy ending. Sometimes there will be moments that will have many horrible things.

There are a few forms of media not romanticized much. An example is Harry potter.

    1. Good point on the differences between hope and confidence, agreed. I wouldn't relate "cockiness" to confidence because confidence is something you would need in certain situations, "cockiness" is like being self-conceded.

      Delete
    2. If you get too confident, that is cocky.
You think you are the best, and become self-centred.

      Delete
    3. i agree with donna i dont think to much confidence turns to cockiness because i think people just do that to make them have more confidence like what mr.cheney said some sports players need some one to boost them up all the time

      Delete
    4. .....i remember mr.cheney talking about the "big shot player" that thinks he is so awesome at the sport, there could be someone like that. But if that person is cocky then too much confidence is bad in some cases because when that person is cocky it wont make them better at the sport. Usually if you cheer for every goal you make you probably aren't that great and don't want to be better then you already are.

      Delete
    5. they need a certain amount of confidence.
too much would make you over confident, and thats why i think it would make you cocky.

      Delete
    6. i like that it is true that hope can be a false assumption however what if you are right about your confidence and you are really cocky would this affect your social life and it will lose your friends?

      Delete
    7. but what if your confidence is always right than what happens

      Delete
    8. you will never know because you can't be always right, therefore you cant be right about your confidence so it wont effect your social life.

  5. Being hopeful and confident are almost never a bad thing to be. There are some scenarios where hope and confidence is an important factor. In competitive sports games, in life or death situations where you are not the victim. In we all fall down, John and Will are in a life or death situation, but they don't know that yet. I'm assuming that John and Will are confident in this situation, because they knew that they were lucky by not staying up on the top level of the tower, like everyone else was did. They seem to be more confident and hopeful then the average person going down stairs away from a plane crash in a tower, with fire, smoke and ashes from dead bodies. I think its good for them to be confident and hopeful because in this situation its about "mind over matter." Ill use the being sick example, if i had the flu, my whole mood and mind will match with the virus, "bad." I keep thinking about how horrible it is to be sick, i keep thinking ill never get better, no hope or confidence whatsoever. The more i think about how horrible it is, the more horrible i feel, the sicker i feel. If i were to go to extremes and commit suicide because of a horrible feeling from the flu, it would be because of my mind, not because of the matter (virus) So that would explain how the saying "mind over matter" connects and relates to being hopeful and confident and whether its ever a bad thing.

    1. @Donna, I don't think Will is that confident because hes scared what would happen to him if he doesn't get out. He's afraid and maybe that's why he didn't want to take Ting, she would slow them down.

      Delete
    2. Good point, haven't thought of Will too much, just John that is confident for sure.

    3. As an extension can you connect this to the article on super people and say that, people are smarter than us because they think they're smarter and therefor get higher grades? (This is like the Logical sentences) They think they're smarter than us that's why they are in those specialized schools? And your saying that whatever you think you are, you think your smart so your smart. You think you're big, you're big, right?

      Delete
  6. i think that being hopeful and confident sometimes can be bed because this can connect to gambling if your favorite team won 20 games in a row and their next game is against the worst team in the league with confidence and a lot of hope you know that they are going to win so you bet with your friend that they are going to win and they lost so you lose money because you had confidence in something bad also if you take drugs to enhance your game and you hope you turn better you would but you would get caught by someone and it is bad again because you hoped for something bad.

    1. However i would like to add another point these points only apply if someone takes advantage of there confident and hope. it is always good to be hopeful and confident because it leads one into a positive outlook. In conclusion always thinking that the glass is half full than half empty leads to postive thinking and attitude in life.

      Delete
    2. So your in the middle because, your idea of hope and confidence is based on better or worse, good or bad? And towards your reply is positiveness reflected upon others when you are happy and positive, and the same for the opposite. Is negativeness reflected upon others when you are negative?

      Delete
    3. @ am17 I agree not so good when you have too much of confidence and hope and I like how you mentioned the glass empty half full perspective ..very clever

  7. I think being hopeful and confident are not a bad thing because in a situation that John and will are something that someone wouldn't even know that it would ever happen because america hasn't ever got hit on there own soil and for John to be calm and cool about it I think it takes really confidence and hopefulness to carry someone one down the stairs while the building is on fire and the people at the top think there trapped and they assume that they will get rescued. sometimes your confidence and hopefulness gets mixed up with the facts and the emotions you feel I think people said yes to the poll because we know the tower is going to fall its just we don't want to see will and John die after they gone so far and how much they had to go through the fire smoke the smell and even after all of that they had to go through then the tower is going to fall on them?

    1. I agree , everyone wants happy ending but not many people get it. They always have hope that firefighter will come, that they wouldn't have to die in the tower. They ant to believe the will get what they want.

  8. Being Hopeful And Confident is never a bad thing. Due to the fact that being hopeful is a good thing always hoping for the best always give you a boost that you are going to make something happen, even though Malav did say that being hopeful does give you a false assumption .

Being Confidence is a good thing because you feel like you can accomplish things with ease and it gives you less stress about up coming basketball games, soccer games..

When I'm losing in a basketball game I always have hope until the buzzer goes off, that's the only way i can push myself over the limit. I always have the confidence that we can win every game.

    1. But what if being hopeful is for something that isn't realistic, then is it okay to have hope? Tomorrow I am going to fly: Will you have hope here? John and Will are going to get out of the building because they have hope? Is that hopefulness or is it rather desperation? Does hope tie in with anything else?

      Delete
    2. what about too much confidence?
would you still say thats good?

      @tabish
they dont know the building is going to fall.
its us that have hope that they will get out.

      Delete
    3. Tabish If you were to say "Tomorrow I am going to fly: Will you have hope here?" There's a super high chance of that not happening, but if you were to be in that situation you would think the building isn't going to fall because they said the building was specially designed for a plane hitting it . So wouldn't you think there would be hope because they "think"/"Know" the building isn't going to fall

      Delete
    4. @ stanley
      i agree.
it was designed to not fall, even if this ever happened.
the architect's fault was that they only used it to see a small plane.
      not an actual commercial one.

  9. Being hopeful and confident isn't a bad thing until we take it to new limits. Having hope in a impossible situations such as when someone dies and another person is hoping its not true or that somehow the person will come back and then it leads to false hope and depression. When people get overconfident it just gets annoying for the people around him/her.Confident is needed to preform better and knowing what your doing is right.Ex.I watching this movie once about fashion and models. It was about a model who created her career at a small start but as she got famous and achieved higher her confidence grew larger until to the point where she was overconfident, she took drugs and still thought she could preform perfect. At the show she failed and her parents/friends saw how the fashion industry changed her.
In Will's and Johns scenario, having hope is alright because they don't know that the building will fall down and they have faith in going on so they might eve make it by some chance.I think John has more confident than will because since we know whats going through will's head he is scared that what if he gets trapped or dies in the tower.

  11. I think having hope and being confident is a good thing to have because those and many other traits is what builds a persons character and personality and without those we would just be people with no emotions kind of. But as I said many people that day we're confident but still died. An example could be Rebound David was so confident and determined that he was going to get his legs back but the chance of him getting it back are very small

  12. I think having hope and confidence are a good thing but they can also be a negative sometimes. When you're thinking about having a huge ego or being to full of yourself, it is a result of having to much confidence and hope. They aren't bad traits but like everything, too much isn't healthy. An example is an athlete, he/she does have some talent and they are so confident of themselves -very confident. They grow an ego and a new form of attitude. Confidence and hope are great to have, but you also have to be realistic in some cases.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well, I don't think that being hopeful and confident is a bad thing but people can get overly confident sometimes. Overall, I do think that having hope and confidence is a good thing, but sometimes no. Sometimes its good to have confidence and hope to get you through things but if we link back to Rebound, David had so much hope and confidence that he would get his legs back, but then there was a small percentage that he would. David had so much confidence and hope that some day he would get his legs back but he needed to move on with the rest of his life because at the end he didn't get his legs back.
