The Cheat - Predictions

The Cheat

Hello Team,

Are next read aloud and novel study is going to be The Cheat by Amy Goldman Koss

Just examining the cover what do you think this book is going to be about?  Any predictions on the types of characters, teachers, problems that might happen.

Read the review/summary below and check out the authors website and then post your predictions.

Summary:

Memorizing the letters out for the geography midterm was the easy part. Put the letters to the tune of Row Your Boat, "Animal animal cat boy cat." Memorize them in a poem form. Whatever it takes. When you have the all the answers, that's the easy part. Getting caught, now that's when it gets sticky. And so it is in to hot water for Sarah, Dan, and Rob, who were all given the test by a student that only Sarah knows. Each sees the ramifications of their actions in different ways and have to struggle, or not, with what it means about them, personally.

  2. @ Mr Cheney for our visualization for rebound should I sketch it or do I have to color it?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think this book will be great but it will have a fast climax. This is because Mr.Cheney told us that the book is short. I have never read any other books by this author,...in fact, I never even heard about this author. I hope this author has written creatively like Eric Walters in Rebound. By looking at this cover, all the kids or teens look like they have been in trouble many times. You can see the attitude expression on their face like they got a bad lecture from someone. It also looks like they got beaten up or they got injures because they have bruises or I think that's mud on their face. I read the link and it says they cheated on a mid term exam for Geography and also got caught that's why it seems interesting to me. I wonder how stressed they got at home and anywhere else.

  4. @:P
    you can sketch or shade
    whatever you're choice is

    ReplyDelete
  5. i think this book wil be realistic because, the summary and the link says that these teens cheated on their midterm exam, which clearly happens in every day life. they wnat the short cut, or the easy way to get around. also the tricky part is to get caught, which happens, and its certain that the teachers and ofcourse parents will be disappointed. another fact is that they teens faces look lik ethey have been struggling, so these students might have chosen to cheat to get the easy way around. this book does seem short so i dont think it will have very descriptive details like rebound. i am curious to know if cheating is symbolic for something in this book.

    ReplyDelete
  6. @ mario i dont think that the bruises your talikng about are bruises, i think its just the way the colour of the layout, book cover is

    ReplyDelete
  7. @ mr cheney i can imagine this happeneing in french when its test time !

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think that the book cheat is going to be about how one person get the the answer question to a test that his going to be given to them and sends it to a friend in his class and the friend sends it to everyone in the class.so after they write the teachers surprise by there mark and the friend have keeping it a secret and realize that have done something wrong which they shouldn't have done

    ReplyDelete
  9. i think that the book will be about a girl that cheated other people in many ways and in the end the girl will learn a lesson when she gets cheated by someone

    ReplyDelete
  10. @mario
so do you think that every small book has a quick climax because in some small books the climax is alot.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @sana
do you think that a book will have such a small problem like cheating on a test because i do not think a book will be good with a story like that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @tulsi we will have to read the will have to read the book to understand what cheat is symbolic of.can wait to read the book seems interesting

@mario what makes you think that they have bruises on there faces because I don't think they are briuses.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @tulsi
i think that this book has a small story about cheating on a exam so i think that it will be descriptive also that is true i also do not know how it can be symbolic.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @mario
" I wonder how stressed they got at home and anywhere else." what do you mean by that how are they stressed at home.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @am17 first of all I think cheating is not that much of a small problem and I also meant that they will make up more lies on top lies just so they can't get away with cheating on the test.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @am17 if you read the link you will understand what Mario is talking about

    ReplyDelete
  17. @tulsi
so do you think that they will get away on cheating the test.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Tehreem, a touch of colour would be sharp, but not essential. Were you visualizing the book in black and white?

    ReplyDelete
  19. @tulsi
so what do you think cheating can be symbolic for.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nice to see you back Aqib

a midterm is of much more significance then a test. In high school, like grade 7 and 8 use to have, is exams and midterms. The results of the test were worth HALF of your grade.

I like the detailed investigation Abeeshan of the characters faces!

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Tulsi, glad were already exploring symbolism, perhaps its the geography midterm that is symbolic!

    ReplyDelete
  22. @sana
do you think that Sarah, Dan, and Rob cheat all the time and they have a bad reputation meaning do you think that they are the bad people in the school.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @mr.cheney
i think that it is pretty dumb for people to cheat on something worth 50% of your marks because if they get caught i think the punishment is getting a 0 on the exam which can make them fail geography.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @mr.cheney
why does Sarah, Dan, and Rob act like this in this particular subject geography.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @tulsi
so do you think that there parents care about them because what if the parents are drug addicts or they party everyday maybe if that happens the parents would not care.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @mario
so do you think that just because the book is short it will not be fun and interesting like rebound

    ReplyDelete
  27. @mr.cheney
did you read this book to your class last year

    ReplyDelete
  28. I did read it last year.

why do people cheat? unfortunately because it works, if it didn't work people wouldn't do it.

It takes strong morals and values to stay away from the simplicity and convenience of cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  29. well cheating is not good because it can lead in to major problems like if an engineer cheats on his or her exam and aces it he can build a building and it would collapse because he learnt nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  30. also if you get away you are lucky but if you do not you will suffer bad consequences which is why they say "honesty is the best policy".

    ReplyDelete
  31. @mario
once again they can be stressed at home because there parents could be drug addicts or they can be party people.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think that there are a group of friends who cheat/use other people. or mybe they have cheated in a exam, quiz, tournament,or maybe a test. and in the end they will get cheated, like what goes around comes around.

    @aqib
cheating has nothing to do with honesty

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ aqib
they might also be stressed for other reasons like how david was

    ReplyDelete
  34. @tulsi
but maybe they can be bruises maybe they do get beaten up.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @aqib
why do you think only the girl will cheat the others.
and change your pic to yoshi

    ReplyDelete
  36. @ tulsi
so the bruises are from the cover, okay

    ReplyDelete
  37. The Three Amigos of Grade 7 are taking over the blog. Perhaps now you have broken the mold of complacency and taken an engaged approach to homework.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @ aqib
well if it is a small book how would there be a lot of detail, it most likely be lack of detail and lack of detail is a quicker scene and a quicker scene is a quicker climax. This is most of the time plus this is my prediction so I think it was a good guess dont you think?

    ReplyDelete
  39. @ mr.cheney
who exactly are you talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  40. @ Sana
yea Tulsi already explained it to me i thought the book layout of the bruises were supposed to be bruises.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @ aqib
as the summary from the link said that they are having hard time for one mistake at home and anywhere else so that means they are hated by their parents thus they are under pressure.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @ mr.cheney
    ohh okak thanks then

    ReplyDelete
  43. @ aqib
cheating leads to more cheating because you got away with it the first time so your more motivated by that and your pears. Which leads to stealing then when you grow up it becomes worse.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @ mr.cheney
thank you for mentioning my prediction

    ReplyDelete
  45. @ aqib
i said i hope it will be interesting and fun Like not NOT LIKE like REBOUND.
    Sorry if that confused you.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ aqib
who knows! if the parents were like that
    good prediction though

    ReplyDelete
  47. @ Mr.Cheney yes we have well for sure I know i have took some action for the blog

    ReplyDelete
  48. and just like fundraising and trips etc, it takes one to get a few to follow.

and yes you have blogged more in the past 3 days then all year, but stay strong and consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @ mr.cheney
how long is the can food drive?

    ReplyDelete
  50. why would they be scared? tell me more.

    ReplyDelete
  51. okay, now by looking at how much time we have, we can't go small to big in 3 weeks I don't know about that. I think since Mr.Cheney has experienced this many times, we should go with his idea:go big from the start like the previous clases he had.
OUR MINIMAL GOAL IS 1000 right?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think they would be scared because the title is called the cheat so i think that someone cheated like tricked them to do something and they got cheated like scammed.

    ReplyDelete
  53. nobody likes to be scammed, especially by friends.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think they all got scammed like there all friends and some other people scammed them

    ReplyDelete
  55. @ Blueranger
yah you cleverly kind of switched most people's idea
I like that prediction I also think that will happen too.

    ReplyDelete
  56. does it relate to rebound like when David gets called names and racism

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think that this book as it said in the summary is about a test that only Sarah knows and the others don't want to fail but try to study but just always end up slacking off so they decided to cheat and Sarah agreed because she doesn't want to be the stupid person , she doesn't want to be the goody two shoes .....because a lot of people tend to be called snitch and stuff like that. So when they decided to cheat they need to find out how because the teacher is very cautious so they have to be very sneaky!

    ReplyDelete
  58. @vinay
maybe, it might be a group of friends who get called losers by everyone, and they take action

    ReplyDelete
  59. i think that this book might be about cheating, but not test cheating. i think this because the title says "the cheat". not cheating. so its only once they cheat5 in the book. and it wouldent make sense to right about a girls cheating on 1 test

    ReplyDelete
  60. @ luigi
than how does that relate to the title cheat?
also maybe "the cheat" sounds more better than "cheating" when looking at a title choice
finally it wouldn't make sense to write a book it about people cheating on a test but maybe the geography test was symbolic like the wheel chair in Rebound.

    ReplyDelete
  61. @luigi Or it relates to rebound they go to school and places and they get made fun of or like you said losers and they make it stop some how like David came back at the end

    ReplyDelete
  62. who's Yoshi, luigi, and Mario prabhjot is mario i think or luigi???

    ReplyDelete
  63. This story seems interesting. I have never read any books from this author or ever heard about her. I think this story is about these kids that are given a test from a student only sarah knows ( as said in the summary ) and these kids have to struggle to prove themselves right from something they were accused of. I know you might be thinking "but what does that have to do with the title"? well sometimes some books title's have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! to do with the story and so maybe this book is one of those books.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think this book about a few kids who cheat and when they get caught , they have their own problems to deal with.Like how their families would react or what will happen to them and how they will be looked after everyone knows they have been cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Peach, me either , other than when we read it last year i have never heard of the author before

@Luigi, If it isn't test kind of cheating then what kind of cheating could there be?

@ Blueranger, I think they would be called names if the students found out because no ones wants to be caught cheating but yet people still do it rather then studying because its faster.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @abeeshan
but i dont think a book will be interesting if they talk about cheating on 1 test, it could be something else like a tournament, or cheating other. @peach who are you

    ReplyDelete
  67. @ luigi
yes I agree I was just trying to explain why I think the author chose cheat instead of cheating

    ReplyDelete
  68. @ sonali
    yosh is aqib
    mario me abeeshan and
    luigi is prabhjot

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well I think think that this book looks very interesting. I think that it is about 5 kids who run away from home and they have like this big adventure ahead of them. Or, it could be something similar to Rebound.

    ReplyDelete
  70. @DubstepLover
Why do you think they will run away?
Is it because you seen other books that have that scene?

    ReplyDelete
  71. @prabhjot
i think it does because you are not being honest about what you are doing also if someone finds you would lie and then you will not be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  72. @mario
ya i got mixed up and still do you think that it will be fun like rebound.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @mario
YES you are right it gets worser when you get older.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @prabhjot
then tell me how else can they be stressed.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @mario
that is true but you see maybe there will not be alot of places where you can show detail.

    ReplyDelete
  76. @mario
i do not think one mistake at home can make the parents hate their children.

    ReplyDelete
  77. @aqib
they can be stressed like being made fun of people with no friends, or like david how nothing was going right

    ReplyDelete
  78. @aqib
what if that one mistake was setting the house on fire?

    ReplyDelete
  79. @aqib
how does cheating get worse if your older? what if you were 60, then what would you cheat on

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think this book is about a group of friends that cheat on a big test, either because they didn't know what to do or couldn't bother studying for it maybe because it's a lot of stress. I don't think they are going to get caught, because I think the author wants to show us how hard it is to get away with that and what the consequences the characters will have to face.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Luigi so your saying that the characters are going to cheat to be liked by their peers

    ReplyDelete
  82. @shelby
how would it make sense if the authors messsage would be that its hard to get away with cheating?and you said they wont get caught to show its hard to get away with it

    ReplyDelete
  83. @Mario I agree I think it does get worse when your older because it's more homework, studying for test etc

    ReplyDelete
  84. @shelby like i said to aqib, picture you were60, what could you possibly cheat off

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Luigi what I mean is that it's hard to get away with cheating because your very paranoid about someone like a teacher finding out, so why bother putting yourself through all that streaa when you could just study or ask, so it's kind of like karma

    ReplyDelete
  86. @Luigi you said they could be stressed by being made fun of. So I said they are doing cheating to be liked by their peers

    ReplyDelete
  87. @shelby
but would you go telll all your peers you cheated, when there might be a possibility to go to the teacher?

    ReplyDelete
  88. @Luigi what I mean when I said cheating gets worse when your older I meant in high school and college

    ReplyDelete
  89. @shelby
i dont think anyone would cheat in college because if they find out, they would take the money you already paid, and expell you

    ReplyDelete
  90. @Luigi i don't mean your actually going to go tell your friends that you cheated i meant that when finally get it back and you did good you will begin to get noticed by your peers

    ReplyDelete
  91. @Luigi, cheating in University is almost epidemic.

    ReplyDelete
  92. @ Shelby, nice to see you black on the blog

    ReplyDelete
  93. @shelby do u think it relates to rebound where David gets called names and made fun of could these people on the cover are going through this in the book

    ReplyDelete
  94. @Yellowranger i agree because if a child starts cheating at a young age , then they would continue it on forever and it would become there habit and maybe someone will notice or maybe not.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Good blog this weekend.

great to see you being consistent Vinay,

Team 7 has really dominated the blog the last 4 or 5 days. Especially the Mario Team.

For those that have had moments of greatness try to work on consistency. The grade 8 students that dominated the blog last weekend have been no where this weekend.

We will start tomorrow by reading the 1st few chapters.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I didn't get the summary, but I think this book is about
How these kids are in a big situation and are planning something.
A way to cheat someone, but their plan backfires and they end up getting cheated on.

    ReplyDelete
  97. i think the book has so far been really good and very interesting.Although the book is very iteresting i think it will be different and maybe a bit hard to understand. As well there is so far allot of humour which is great in this book. And as allot of us have commented it is very "realistic."

    ReplyDelete
  98. @rohan I agree I think it will be confusing because its coming from different perspectives

    ReplyDelete
  99. To me i think that the book may be about someone cheating on someone else or something like that since it has those characters because 3 of them could be the couple and ther person that was cheated on and the other three could be like the best friend or the brother that wants to beat the dude up or something like that

    ReplyDelete
  100. The book this far has been interesting. I think it is going to be very suspensful. I like this author's style better than the traditional writing style. I can better understand the character because they all explain thier thoughts and I understand thier actions. It sounds like a good book thus far and I'm excited to seee how it plays out!

    ReplyDelete
  101. @RedRanger I think the books about cheating on the midterm not cheating on others with relationships.

    ReplyDelete
  102. @mr.cheney how many perspectives are there throughout the book.

    ReplyDelete
  103. @Luigi its not possible to cheat in college because first of all you would get Expelled and with that record you wont get into anyother colleges. And they have personal answer questions and they have like questions that you would have to write long answers and its hard to cheat when you have to remember so much

    ReplyDelete
  104. @ButterCup i think i would know that but it was my guess from before so i would have to write it

    ReplyDelete
  105. I thought this book was about people cheating and about one perspective but this book is with a lot of perspectives not just like the regular type of book. The Author is really creative because he puts more characters into the book each character has different problems b

    ReplyDelete
  106. I also think by thi far is that the book is about how when people try to cheat of tests it would backfire on them.(e.g how the girl tried to cheat and he realized allot of her answer were wrong almost all.

    ReplyDelete
  107. @BlueRanger i dont think this book is going to be similar to Rebound because Rebound was about inequality while this books seems like its about doing the right thing

    ReplyDelete
  108. @stanley do you think of having different perspectives would make it harder to understand?

    ReplyDelete
  109. So far of what we've read, I think the cheat will be a interesting novel, with the author's unique stype of writing and the character's difference in personality, it will make it enjoyable.
@shelby good prediction, it probably will have a strong message just like rebound.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I checked out the website and the story line seems realistic to me. Its about a couple of kids trying to "survive" in school. When they get into trouble by getting caught for cheating. The realisticness of this event is that in middle school theres always going to be students that have gotten to the point that they dont want to study and focus at school, they find that hard, easier to just cheat.

    ReplyDelete
  111. @Olga nice prediction, but what do you think the moral of the book would be based on that event happening?

    ReplyDelete
  112. I think that the characters are going to cheat multiple times before they get caught.

    ReplyDelete
  113. what if one of the characters got caught cheating when he really wasnt, when he was helping out a friend and that friend is influencing the person to do "bad" things for him/her.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think a couple of freinds gave each other cheats because after one person gave one the "anwers"(or animal, cat,,etc.)and they probaly passed it on to each other,But i wonder if they would get caught because who will they caught from and who would notice they all the anwers?

    ReplyDelete
  115. @Deadmau , That could happen too because the book does look pretty short but i think more would happen later on as the story goes on.

    ReplyDelete
  116. @RedRanger oh. It is possible to cheat in college. When we cheat, we are well aware of the consequences but continue to cheat. Cheating is possible anywhere, participation just decreases because of the consequence.

    ReplyDelete
  117. @Buttercup, I agree because everyone uses cheating bcause its easier and it saves alot of time and i think everyone could realte to that even if they wouldnt addmit it, theey would have done cheating at some point of their life.

    ReplyDelete
  118. @Rohan, I think some of the answers arte wrong because even Rob noticed some of them werent right even when he knew one of the answeres because it realted to his dad.

    ReplyDelete
  119. the begining was quite interesting, and is the whole story based on a test answers?

    ReplyDelete
  120. @malav
i agree it was interesing. but if it is all about the midterm it wouldent be as fun to read

    ReplyDelete
  121. @donna
im pretty sure they would seperate the desks for no talking, they did that for EQAO they might do it in the midterm too

    ReplyDelete
  122. @Thamil and Nicole, I commented on this earlier in the post. But assured cheating does not stop in university. In fact cheating and plagiarism is a HUGE problem.

And this type of behaviour continues in the work world everywhere.

Cheating works, thats why people do it. A few are caught and some have strong enough values to not cheat, but many do.

    ReplyDelete
  123. @donna
but the books name is THE Cheat, so it only means one time.

    ReplyDelete
  124. @aqib
it's basically half your mark plus it's important to get a good mark

    ReplyDelete
  125. The book was so far good. It was a little confusing I'm not used to the characters because there is a lot going on in each perspective. So it was confusing,I couldn't catch up with "who did this or who felt this". I'm sure I'll get used to it. Fortunately, so far there was some jokes and humour which will keep me more engaged to the book.

    ReplyDelete
  126. @ Rohan
good to know the book seems realistic to people I also agree.

    ReplyDelete
  127. @abeeshan
i agree, it was quite hard to catch up on who they were. also while doing the work i only knew 1 person, i needed to ask everyone to find out

    ReplyDelete
  128. @ buttercup
why do you think the book is suspensful?
also, I agree that the author is very detailed with the character's thoughts and feelings.
I personally think that maybe the author wrote a book like this because she maybe cheated on something big like a midterm as well, and must of got caught. That's why I think she is so detailed.

    ReplyDelete
  129. @ prabhjot
same, it was hard to answer the journal response
I wanted to read it again by myself so maybe I understand it better. But since I had explanations by some people, now I don't need to read it again.

    ReplyDelete
  130. @ Rohan Having more than 1 perspective is going to be complex and a bit harder to understand, not harder to understand but maybe a bit confusing.

    ReplyDelete
  131. @ Mr.Cheney, but don't they easily get caught for plagiarism in universities?I think i heard that somewhere because the universities professors could tell if its been copied or actually written itself.

@Mario,There are a lot of perspectives and i think that's why it makes this book so unique because it shows everyone's different reactions to one situation.

    ReplyDelete
  132. @ Jan101
yea exactly, I connect this to the time Mr.Cheney told us that everyone has difficult times in life and you that you can't live life always happy. And how everyone is feeling something different and sharing the same feeling and plus to understand how they EXACTLY feel is showing empathy.

    ReplyDelete
  133. even copying other students work from previous years is a problem, students selling essays at university is a problem.

    cheating is big business.

    ReplyDelete
  134. @ Mr.Cheney
just curious: would you get caught if you get you copy of previous students' work?
do the universities or the teachers have a sample or something from previous students' work from last year,if not how would you get caught?

    ReplyDelete
  135. @Mr Cheney
Did I miss a read aloud? And theres a post on the Math blog

    ReplyDelete
  136. @ Tabish yeah you missed the read aloud.

    ReplyDelete
  137. @The sauce boss, we started reading THE CHEAT and we got our first glimpse of most of the characters,

    ReplyDelete
  138. Cheating is big business and often tough to catch, ill go check the math page.

    ReplyDelete
  139. the like read aloud was like really like way lame like.

    ReplyDelete
  140. @Mario,i agree how would the teachers know its been copied form another previous student?Maybe they have them safe and if one of them seems similar they get caught or something

    ReplyDelete
  141. good to see you blogging Stanley, go add your thoughts to the can food drive

    ReplyDelete
  142. i thought i was on the gym page at first.
    nice new template.

    ReplyDelete
  143. @ luigi
    same.
i dont think it would be that good if its all based on a midterm test.
but so far, it pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  144. @ tabish we have just started reading the cheat.
so far, there was a guy that gave a girl named sarah, like all the answers.
and like she told a few of her firends, and some people are cheating on test.
there was more to the story, and theres one girl named katie that keeps saying like.
it is pretty funny, and it gets old a bit as well.

  150. Fine. Well thanks Donna. I think no, but things like that do happen. I read a book once, and I remember the moral of the book was the event happening. What do you think?

  151. i made a bunch of grammar errors...

@luigi true but what if the book title is talking about only one of the cheats that was made.

  152. I think the author is trying to say that there will always be a consequence for every mistake a person makes.

  153. @Donna
    Nice (:
I think that the author means that what goes around comes around.

  155. @mr cheney will we loose marks for expressing emotions in our comments by using brackets and colons...?

  157. Thus far this book sees confusing but reallly funny and true I agree is what goes around comes around Jack as you can see really likes Sarah and gave her the test answer which gave it to rob who gave it to Dan and now everyone is getting in trouble. I wonder what else Jack would to for Sarah with a toothpaste simile. Would Sarah be the one to tell on jack

  158. I never read a book like this when characters changing on the time it seems interesting and what different people can sound think and act like.

  159. Jack=Jake

Yes, It would seem easy and realistic for Sarah to save herself by turning in Jake, she clearly doesn't like him very much.

  160. @mr cheney
i dont think sarah will turn him in because it doesent seem like she would do that
