King - 3

King

We have seen many sides of Martin Luther King Jr.  He is indeed a complex man, and a reflection on the difficulties of being a Leader.

Thus far what is the most surprising detail about Martin Luther King you have learned thus far?

Also comment on what you think are the essential components of leadership?

  1. i think that the most surprising detail about MLK is that sometimes he felt like giving up, and losing hope.
i have never heard/read/watched something that said he was on the verge of quitting.
this is what makes me appreciate the more detail we are getting while we are watching this movie.

i think the essential components of leadership are:
    bravery,
    determination,
and standing up for what is right.

i dont think his determination and confidence was that surprising because we always hear about him being brave and confident.

i think that there are going to be more assassination attempts against him, but he will survive.
my first reaction was being shocked because she looked and sounded so nice, and then out of nowhere she stabs him.
she was black and MLK was fighting for black freedom and so that surprised me that she would want to kill him. maybe it was becuase of his no-violence theme.

i would give up because i dont think i could be that brave.

i dont think i have a favourite part in the movie. all the parts were good.

    6. do you think that there is a chance that the woman got payed to stab him.

      Delete
    7. I think that its not true because I a girl was payed to try to kill civil rights for her own kind that wouldn't be so wise most likely she could have been forced to do that by the officers.

      Delete
    8. @ aqib that may be the issue,
but i think tushar's explanation is correct.
she was forced to kill him, but maybe not by the officers.

    9. getting payed to kill someone fighting for your rights would be dumb

  2. the most surprising information that i have received from this video was his his determination of getting black people freedom i have never knew he went to jail so many times and still did not bother much and also after he got stabbed if i were him i would step down from such dangerous things but he said no and stood up and did not care of what could happen to him next.

i think the essential components of leadership is determination, courage and confidence .

i think of determination because if you have no spirit for what you are standing up for then you should not at all stand up for it .

after that i thought of courage because if you are scared to stand up and fight for your cause then you can not achieve what MLK achieved because he was not scared of being in jail for a couple of times.

lastly i chose confidence because if you are not confident of what you are saying then that means that you truly do not believe in what you are saying like if MLK did not believe in what he was saying then maybe still black people would not have freedom.

    1. Great Detail in your response. Isn't courage only known after the fact. Can you ever know before that a person will have courage?

i also found it amazing that he went to jail so many times.

  5. I think the most surprising detail about King is all the hidden struggles he went through physically, and especially mentally. Many people know his is end result but not many see the journey and he did really did sacrifice and go through a lot to end up where he did.

I believe the most important component of a leader is definitely determination. If you are truly determined then I think you can get anywhere you want. You probably also need to have a good influence on people, that way they would follow you.

    1. Were there others that were just or even more determined...recall the other man helping MLK that was so outraged that despite his passion and intellect people wouldn't follow him

What are some of the other missing ingredients?

  6. I found it amazing that he went trough thick and thin with all those attacks on him the worst times like that drive to jail all those police officers treating him like that if the others that bailed him and helped him weren't there then he would be absolutely nothing it was also amazing that their own kind as the assasinator that tryed to kill MLK did was she working with the racist officers maybe. This is yet to be figured out. This is yet the best disciptionated movie I've ever seen. I think that leadership is when the followers choose you for that job and you know how to do that job that is what a leader is.

    1. Yes racism runs rampant, but consider those that allowed segregation to continue despite a lack of being racist.

Many although in support of MLK and his passions, still stood by and watched.

    2. @Mr.Cheney: So many people cared about MLKJ so many did but why did they just stand by and watch why didn't they step in a help because the more the people the more their might have been a chance of making a change ....

    3. As we have been exploring in class all year...to take action is very tough. It seems almost human nature to study something, learn what to do, but then be unable to do.

It takes a Real Leader to turn the reluctance of people to get involved and get them involved

      Delete
    4. Yes but Mr.Cheney if a leader is to lead on why cant other just stand by and agree? Like just say yeah or something so Martin would feel that yeah i do have people on my side and they are backing me up! If there is no leader and you want to start making a change yes i agree it is hard but just by getting involved when there is already a leader like why not?

  7. Remember the Quote of the Day...MLK was willing to die for his beliefs? How does this type of thinking fit into leadership?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The quote is "A man will not die for something that is not fit to live"

      Delete
    2. It fits in with the leadership because if you are willing to die for something it must mean your passionate for it. And thats what Martin Luther King lived for to die for a just cause. That's a reason to die, for the rights of others. And as a leader you must be willing to put yourself to the test if your fighting for it. Leadership should be about sacrifice and thats what I think leadership is. Fighting for what you think is right and being the leader of a group that will help you reach the goal.

  9. the most surprising details about Martin Luther King to me are that he had to go through so many struggles such as going to the jail so many times, getting stabbed and how they bombed his house and that he decided to give up because i hardly hear about leaders and politician giving up and just like malav said that i never heard that he gave up or anything like his.
i think that the essential components of leaderships are being brave and confident. i would say that a leader must be brave and confident because if he/she is not brave then that means that they cant take care of their people and if they are not confident then no one will believe on what are they saying or doing because if they are not confident then no one else will be.

    1. Yes appreciate the sacrifice, doubt, and commitment to being a leader. Leadership is hard and exceptionally taxing on the human body.

    2. Yes i also found that very surprising and he followed the steps Gandhi took i don't know if you remember but Gandhi said to be non-violent and Martin did that even thought he went through so many struggles he didn't fight morally or physically. Which is really surprising to me because i believe it if was any of us we wouldn't be able to do that at all

    3. Yes MLK was influence by Gandhi.

  10. I found the most suprising detail of Martin Luther King was that he went through a lot. He went to jail twice for 2 crimes he didn't commit and then was shipped to another facility. I can't imagine the frustration and the anger he must go through everyday. He hears of a black man being abused on the street, his face shows no emotion yet looking past the face I realize that he's much more complex the hurt he's feeling, doesn't nessasarily mean that it shows in his face. But, I think when he's pushed farther than he can go the emotions are let out. It's not all "I say something and you do it because i say" there's very few situations like that. When he wants to win this war through non violence there are the people that disagree with that statement and go out and fight. It's not all the same with leaders, not all fun and games.

I think the essential components of leadership are to have a good intention and to be strong. For all doctor King went through none of us could've imagine being jailed twice for someone else. Because our morals and values have changed since the abolition of racism. To be a leader you must withstand what the opposition throws at you. Martin Luther King was stabbed and yet he kept going. His house was bombed and yet he stopped the people from revolting and attacking because what he belived was right and that was non violence. What he wouldn't do for the rights of black people. He had to be strong in his position. In fact he gave up being a pastor generations of tradition gone to waste because he wanted change. And Mahatma Ghandi quotes "We must be the change we wish to see in the world" He had to give up a lot, and give a lot but, in the end I think he appreciated what he did for his people even though he didn't live to see it.

    1. You will find he went to jail endless times. Despite America's hatred and racism at the time, it is fortunate that the jail and law was able to provide some basic security for him.

In many parts of the world today going to jail is as dangerous as living on the streets.

  11. One thing that i found surprising was how MLKJ wasn't just inspired about what Gandhi said he was inspired also in what Gandhi did by that i mean MLKJ didn't just think about the words Gandhi said he took them in to a deeper meaning the same way he took action he didn't fight with others physically or morally he explained it didn't work once he tried again and Martin followed those steps. Martin was so in to Gandhi and what he did for a county that in 1959 he visited the place Gandhi was born.

An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

  12. If you were in my class in grade 3 Mrs.Jacks i dont know but remember Mr.Fife he taught us a song about Racism its goes something like ....
Racism its a serious thing its not about gold or diamond rings its about faces and races finishing 1st or even last places its times to change this rearrange this we are all people we are equal so lets open our eyes so we can realize so lets open our eyes and realize... now that i think about it its really touching this song is about how its not diamonds vs. and gold or anything like that its not about money even the richest black person would be treated poorly but this really was about faces and MLKJ was the one that tried to finish 1st in the race and he did! That's why today all of us are able to be in a multicultural school other wise think about it ......

  13. First of all, I truly admire MLK's sacrifices.
One new thing I learned through-out this experience was that Mlk not just fought for black's rights but for many's freedom. He had hope. I also found out that MLK didn't have that glory of succeeding everytime, he was just like us he had bad times too.Its not like he got some super powers.
One main characteristic that a leader must have is confidence and hope.
I say confidence because when I watched the movie in class, at first Martin had no confidence that he can make this happen

    1. On Sept. 20, 1958, as Martin Luther King Jr was signing his newly published book at a Harlem bookstore, a 42-year-old woman, apparently deranged, suddenly started screaming and plunged a knife into the civil right leader's chest

Its all in this website: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/The-Day-Martin-Luther-King-Jr-Was-Stabbed-in-Harlem-81964952.html

  16. All i hear this days is that martin luther king is great and he made a change. I never hear of any problems that martin had and now I see that all he went through he had so many hard times and all the bad things that he didn't desire but got because of his skin colour. The most surprising to me was when martin got hurt by people who he was trying to help I though everyone was trying to help martin to achieve something that no one would try because there afraid of speaking up. Martin when he tell his speeches he tells it from his view he was born a speaker and am so glad that he didn't stop when problems came his way he keep on going till he died. i think that the essential components are confident, bravery, courage, and dedication I could see martin had all of these for facing people he knew that could hurt or kill him and his dedication to what he believe in and continued to strive to his dreams he was able to achieve and finished even when he wasn't there to see it happen.

  17. i have never heard of half the things that were shown in the movie.all i heard was that he was a great personwho changed the history for blacks.i never knew he was stabbed ,bombed,or jailed over 120 times.i never knew that being a leader would be so hard.but in his time i thought it was harder. what i mean by that is no freedom at all.without him, the blacks would still be name called, beat up and segregated.but i have a question,if the woman was black, why would she stab him?he was fighting for the blacks freedom, shes back and she is trying to stop him

  18. i think that the most surprising thing to me so far about Martin L King was the fact that he did consider giving up at times as i have never recalled this on short YouTube films and other sites about MLK.We see that he is a and very strong opinionated man and that even though he has gone through many things like going to prison dozens of times or getting stabbed or even as we saw getting his house bombed we still see that he goes on even though he gets to kids and a wife to worry about.

This movie also shows us that there is more to learn about MLK, than school books ,short talking and videos show us about him.As I recall another interesting fact that i learn about MLK was that he improvised almost every message that he spoke and i am guessing he did the same with his most famous speech "I have a dream." And ones again it proves that there is more to know from this movie than i have ever learned about him.
