Connections

Share your connections between the story(article on Teens Living in Hell) and BHJMS from your "reading challenging material" graphic organizer.

Remeber your connections can and should be beyond the scope of the article.   The article specifically talks about teens and the sexual orientation and this may not be something you have encountered at school, but a connection that centers on the theme of students being excluded or bullied for being "different" is indeed a logical connection.  Even in real world text, the stories can be symbolic for other examples.

Post your connections and comment on 2(minimum) others.  Remember to respond to people whop comment on your post.

  1. There are some students that are obese and they don't think they could fit in. People make fun of them because they're different from them they think that your different you should be treated differently. When this happens most of the time the victim doesn't stand up for themselves. People judge you regardless, Just be you.

  2. how come people do something stupid and someone would say thats so gay.like what did gay people do to you they did nothing and people say thats gay this happens alot in BHJMS and it should stop however, no matter how much we talk about it noone would do something.

  3. This relates to our school because gay is symbolism for anything. An example at our school is being a certain race.
There are very mean jokes about a certain race. I've heard people say them at school to those race. It is the most rudest things.
This and being gay is related because they both get made fun of at,
and both are symbols of our real world, and how we live.

  4. The article can make a connection to BHJMS because bullying is everywhere even when lots of peopletyr to stop it.(CSSN-Canadain Safe School Network)Like one way is that people bully people for being a teachers pet or a goody-to-shoe and then they get made fun of later on.Many TDSB organizations make students attend assemblys about this topic. We atteneded an assembly lately and it was very hesrt touching.Thats because people are hugjed everywhere.ETC.skin colour, religion, or for who they are. They explained that no one is the same because in the dictionary the word is defined as the same and no one in our world is the same but everyone is unique in their own way.

  5. My connection to BHJMS is.... This connects to our school because there are students at our school and out of a population of maybe 500-800 students 50% are being bullied of how they walk, talk and by the choices they pick. There are bullies at our school that pick on people. But some people try preventing bullying towards them so they don’t tell anyone the truth (as in being gay etc...)They think is will help but it doesn’t it brings the bully to be more suspicious then they end up being really scared to go out in public. The connection is really that in the text there are students being bullied for who they are and some of those students can be the ones that go to our school.

  6. @Bacon strips-True that , people are always judged for their weight EX, for being obese and then sometimes for being too skinny. Also when people(usally girls) hear thier fat then there afraid to eat anything and then go anoboxious.
People just have nothing to do but judge others.

@AM17, people use the word gay as a bad word and its really a disgrace to people who actually aare gay.

@Malav thats true too because many people get hudged of for their race or from which country their fun.

    i know i would be.
there are also rather mean jokes about i guess every race, but one is more than the others.
some of the jokes are also steriotypical.

    I completely agree.
Gay is used too many times, and more than neccicary.
Whenever we say "that's so gay" that automatically makes us bullies.
We say this as an insulting way, and makes gay people sound stupid, and bad.

  9. Yes, judging people is easy

Yes, bulling is all over our school, and unfortunately likely in our class

"that is so gay" comment immediately highlight's that we are biased and judgmental and instinctively value some humans more then others

  10. My connection to BHJMS is......In BHJMS kids often use the words gay, lesbo etc to make fun of people which can be an insult to actual gay and lesbians. They change the whole defination of the words and use it to insult or make fun of people.I'm pretty sure if we showed people tha article about how "gay students go through hell at school" 50% of the people (not even) would actually understand how it feels to be insulted for being accused for who you are and because your different. These people should be proud of who they are and not sad because of who they aren't.

    @WORD NERD LOL (MALAV)
It's true we do use the word gay and all these other words when they're not needed for eg. if someone sais something stupid then kids would ask them " are you gay" in an insulting way which does make them look stupid, bad and kids/people you should stay away from.

I mean people are so judgemental that if they ever see you with someone who's different ( gay,or has some kind of diesese or problem ) they'll assume you as one of them just because your with them and your talking to them and then you would start to get bullied.

Then later you would try to ditch the kids you were hanging with ( gay, student with dieseses ) and you would show them that your only telling them how stupid they are.

You would try to hide the fact that you were once friends with them and because of this, they might not even have faith in themselves to get a friend because what if their new friend does the same thing your other friend did to you before.

  11. This is just like our school because in this case, being gay is symbolic, like David in a wheelchair. Gay students being bullied is just like constant bullying between groups, cliques and outsiders. Like a group of bestfriends bullying within eachother (five of the best friends bullying/ targeting the other "friend") or the group itself bullying someone that is not so close.

    yes.
that is the un true message almost everyone is making.
they are always calling people/things gay for no certain reason.
they think it is a perfevt subsitute for the word stupid, or anythiing else that is offensive.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This story and our school are in a good comparison
because at our school a lot of people, maybe even adults make fun of others because of who they like, gender, looks, skin colour, aloneness.Suppose there is a gay person they will get made fun of threatened, left by their friends,be alone for the
whole year and tell their parents their gay get kicked out of their house and live in poverty.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @MALAV exactly that's what i meant by the change the whole defination of the word and make the word's new definition a subsitute for stupid or anything else that could be offensive to them.

  15. @ sonali
yes, and if teachers catch students saying gay,
the teachers would ask do you know what gay means, and they would reply: gay means happy.
when they are obviously not using thats so gay as in thats so happy

    ReplyDelete
  16. @ tushar
    that is a sad reality.
even their own parents kick them out of the house just because they are gay.
that is equally as bad as being a bully.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @malav true because they might say/tell the teacher what they meant when they were saying gay was being happy and they would say this just to get out of trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @malav yes it's true that it is equally as bad as being a bully i mean what if you were like them and you got kicked out of your house and then you find out that your son/daughter is a lesbian/gay would you kick them out to get revenge because of your parents throwing you out of the house?

  19. @ sonali
the thought just makes me want to hate those people.
i would definitely not do that.

  20. Our school is very multicultural, we have people with backgrounds from all over the world, so this just shows that no one is the same or can ever be the same or can ever be the same, but we still deserve the same respect, which is what everyone gets, but students at this school still go through daily struggles either being made fun of or simply being called stupid same with those gay students who struggle to get through the day trying to ignore insults and put downs

  21. I remember when that guy came to our school presenting gay rights, I think it was called the anti-bullying presentation...So he was talking about the issue and telling us to not make the problem bigger then it really is, so it got me thinking that more and more people are getting involved into trying to fix this issue. Articles get us aware and participating or supporting organizations get us involved.

  22. the homosexuals, etc are symbolic for other peolpe that are being bullied.

in out scholl a lot of people have been bu7llied or gone through other things. sdome people have been bullied for not having the latest things or not having a good look or what decitions you make.in kindergarden i wore my raincoat that had teddy bears and other little things. i loved very much. the next thing i know is that 2 girls say that my raincoat is baby-ish. i loved that raincoat and that was what i wasnt going to change, because thats who i am.

in the article, homosexuals, etc, were being bullied and insulted for who they are.they chose to be that way and because of almost every one bulling them they dont feel safe unless they are in their homes. the article mentioned a gay boy ,Jamie Hubley, who was bullid since elementry school. people dont treat him as hes human but they treat him as he doesnt exist or as hes an enemy that has to be treated rudley and no one cares. even school adminstartors dont support them.

  23. @Shelby
I agree, everybody goes through that or something similar. Maybe just not at the same extent.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think that people are very rude in terms of if your gay, or fat(obese), or even if your not that smart in one subject. I find it very rude that people can't stop with this. We in our school had a lot of presentations about bulling, we never used them. We have even a petition in the hall way saying that we won't bully people and guess what we broke that petition that very afternoon. Most of the time it's not even the persons fault that they are like this, some can chose but just because they made that decision doesn't mean that we have to judge them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This article can connect to BHJMS alot because the students go through similar situations like Jamie Hubly. And the students don't act back and ask the so called "bullies" to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ olga i agree that veryone gets insulted or called names because of who they are, and as shelby saod everyone is different. every one has their own strenghts and weeknesses and becaus eof their weekness they are made fun of. its like everyone wants a chance to make fun of someone, and the chance they get is someone elses weekness.(it doesnt nessarcerally need to be a weekness)

  27. I know that the people who were mentioned in the article are symbolic for people who get bullied almost everyday. I can connect to BHJMS because it is very multicultural. I was once bullied in Grade 1 because I was the only Srilankan/Tamil person their. I was so annoyed. I think that this is very disrespectful. I want to be treated the way the people who treat me want to be treated. I know many bullies today and will maybe know in the future. I noticed two things about bullies. 1. Bullies wont stop until you stand up. They will get more tougher and tougher. 2. I you noticed if a bully gets in trouble, and when they're let go they still continue what they have been doing. Well most of them. They just won't ever learn. Most people who are homosexual get treated differently, that is what exactly happens to David even-though, he wants to prove to everyone he is capable of doing things they do on a daily basis
