Reading Challenging Material

Hello Team,

This is a continuation of the lesson started in class.  We are leaning tools that will help us actively read challenging material.

You will need your Scrap book, as well as an on line Dictionary, Thesaurus, and Wikipedia.

Here is the article:

Super People

The article is about the growing inequality to access  higher level education

1. jot down the big ideas
2. jot down the supporting evidence of the big ideas (look at the specific examples in the text)
3. jot down 10 new or challenging words
4. look up and investigate 2 places, persons, or things.

This info will go into your scrap book.  It may be messy and unstructured as you work your way through the article.  We will come back and organize, solidify, and discuss our active reading.

  1. It seems a few people found the article boring. Why? was it the content? The length? too much unknown information?

also in a word how would you describe the article?

  2. It was boring because it was very Hard to understand. The length as well, most people can get it, but me for example if I don't like something I'm thinking something completely different. In one word I would say it is Confusing.

  5. i will agree with olga.
it may be boring for people because of all 3 reasons.

for me it would be " interesting"
not like something you found fascinating,
but in an okay way, that caught my eye at places.

  8. I didn't find the article boring, because I was trying to stay engaged to it. I could understand some of the points they were making, the other things they were trying to say confused me a little because of the vocabulary.

  9. I would consider the article (or most of it) interesting. It opened my mind to a possibility of how many middle class americans are trying to get into an amazing university. When my mind was stuck on how many cant get in. What i was trying to figure out during the article is the meaning of super people. Im thinking it means those highly educated and athletic kids who were winners ever since childhood.

  10. Yes that is what I try to do. Even if it is boring,
    Give it a shot.
    Stay engaged.
and then, when you read more, it gets more interesting,
    Until you actually like it.

Especially since I understand the vocabulary and
    Who the people are.
I makes it easier to read, and more interesting.
So when I read it again, it makes more sense, and I like it.

  11. As well, you may indeed find it boring. As a student this is an obstacle you may confront and even more important to know tools and strategies to help you understand and appreciate the article.
