Remembrance Day - WWII movies

I realize many were disappointing at the results of the poll to watch the WWII films.  Many wanted a forum to work out a possible plan.  I have found a few other video's on related topics that we can watch to explore certain aspects of the war.  I have a Vimy Ridge video and a Battle of Britain video, neither are as intense and realistic as the other films but they are detailed and accurate.  Share your thoughts:

The Real Valkyrie Attempt

Part II:

What did you think of the Saving Private Ryan video and Valkyrie?  How did you feel watching the D-Day invasions?  Does that impact the way you think about Remembrance Day?

  1. I think that this looks really good to watch. As it has many good actors playing the roles. Not only does it have good actors but the story line of this movie and how it is directed looks amazing.

  2. The movie look interesting and i would watch it but i think i would like to see the other "intense and realistic one" because everyone in the class wanted to watch it and sounds like it was really good.

  3. I think that this movie would be good to watch. It looks interesting but i was looking forward to watching the other two movies you showed us in class. I was really curious to see what it was about. I would like too see the other movie you showed us in class.

  5. W.O.W Amazing trailer really got me into it, I've seen Saving Private Ryan a few times but still kinda want to watch it and watch Valkyrie.

@Eden, the trailer is for one of the movies I showed you yesterday.

  7. i am finally back on the blog!!!!

i really find this an amazing trailer i would like to watch it because it is 100% accurate.

  8. @sana
i agree the people that do not feel comfortable should just read a book or something like that

    ReplyDelete
  9. @eden
i would like that too because i want to know how it was really like back in the war time .

    ReplyDelete
  10. Its not 100 percent accurate, but very detailed, and realistic, and any misrepresentations are minimal.

be careful to just tell people to go read, teamwork is not about pushing people off to the side if they do not agree with you.

  11. and yes Aqib, welcome back to the blog world

  12. THIS LOOKS AMAZING!
i definitely want to watch this!
it looks like a pretty cool plan, and
    quite a story.

  14. i dont think that this will be as intense as saving juno.

  15. i find this movie is very detailed and very intense if we do get to watch this im looking forward as i said before on the last post i like action and i don't find this movie scary at all well kinda but i find it interesting. I like the fact that it was based on a true story because story's like that we can connect because most of the time it has a DEEP meaning to it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Mr.Cheney: i get a lot of people would find it rude to go in the corner and read but wonder if instead of reading they do something else fun just the way we are watching this fun intense movie so we are able to enjoy it equally or is that still not teamwork?

    ReplyDelete
  17. @ mr cheney
do we get to pick the bus seating plans, or do you have them?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @MR. Cheney ohh i never knew i thought this was this was another movie you wanted to show us.

    ReplyDelete
  19. another thing i like is that the fact it actually shows bombing not cause it fun to see but because you can get more knowledge on how much people actually risk their lives and also how much people are afraid of dying but they stand up!

    ReplyDelete
  20. @ neha
yes good point, and it also shows how much damage the bomb causes, and how far everything can explode

    ReplyDelete
  21. Valkyrie, is suspenseful, there is some fighting and battles, but mostly its about a group of soldiers that tried to assassinate Hitler, take over Germany and end the war.

I have to make up a seating plan, tell me who you want to sit with and I will try and make it work

yes a plan for anybody who does not want to watch it, is possible

    ReplyDelete
  22. @wordnerd: yes exactly because we don't usually see movies we just see picture which tells us yea OK they are risking their lives but when actually seeing it meaning how its done it brings that OH MY GOSH! which i find is what is needed.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Mr.Cheney: i get the point as long as we are all evolved because if i had said no and i would sit out I for sure would want to do something as fun as watching a movie.. i know the movie isn't fun like happy feet its very serious but the fact is we still get to watch a movie so i guess we all can plan something. I have something on the top of my head but i'm still not sure on what it is .

    ReplyDelete
  24. This looks like a really great movie, much more deeper and interesting than the usual. I look forward to watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ Mr.Cheney
I think that this is a very good movie and I think still think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. sorry it is storming juno, not saving

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ mr cheney can we also watch the other one?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am looking forward to watch this movie. It sounds and looks interesting from the beginning. I thought Hitler suicided apparently that's what I heard. I always wanted to know more about Hitler and his perspective and life. Now I have a chance to watch a very accurate and intense movie about it, which will also help me make feel how war really was. So, if I watch this movie I will have 2 benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You can and should read about this event first.

The Saving Private Ryan video, has a very gruesome and intense opening scene with soldiers landing on the Normandy beaches in 1944, the rest of the story is very hollywood and not realistic, so we would, if we work it out, only watch the first 10 minutes. You will have a firm understanding of why we should be so mindful and respectful at Remembrance Day

    ReplyDelete
  30. @ abeeshan
im pretty sure hitler did commit suicide.
this was an attempt. they didnt succeed.

  32. I would like to watch this movie it seem's pretty interesting. This will teach us about how it was like to be in war. The actors role's looks very realistic.

  33. this video doesn't look unappropriated

  34. not at 1130! But good to see you on the blog 2 days in a row Vinay

ya it doesnt look really that bad.
and mrcheney what happen to the ago post?
    it wont appear anymore

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, the blog was giving me trouble, I made a separate page for the AGO...

the people that said No or were unsure should come up too me, it seems many really do want to watch these films? Perhaps it is doable!

    ReplyDelete
  37. i find the first 20-30 minutes of valkyerie alright i certainly now appreciate remembrance day way more now because just in a mili second people died for us and fought for this country .

    ReplyDelete
  38. @mr.cheney
you are right about how people do not have last words because they die once they get shot.

    ReplyDelete
  39. movies do always have a sad and fake ending for instance in Saving private ryan someone died and he did not stop and cry instead he ran to a jeep to run away.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Beginning of Valkyerie is interesting and intense , it makes me just wanna watch on and see whats going to happen next.It is based on a real movie right? As am17 said it makes me appreciate Remembrance day because the soldiers deaths were very fast and they knew that since they joined the war that they might not survive by the end.
I think a scene i wouldn't forget is the one under the water because they thought for a few seconds that they would be safe but no, the bullets came and their death under the water was a scene i don't think i'll ever forget from the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Saving Pirate Ryan was very intese, that just shows how much they glamorize war scenes. It is very depressing because it happens in one split second. This made me appreciate Remembrance Day even more.
The beginning of Valkyerie seems very interesting. It is hard to believe these movies are based on real events and procedures because I wouldn't dream of someone with the character to perform that way.

  43. I think the first 20 minutes of valkryie were really good because it showed what really happened like the assassination attempt for hitler.I also really liked saving private ryan because it showed real life perspectives like diving in the water to show that you cant hide. But the scene of private ryan emphasizes how mr cheney was talking about no last words, they just die instantly.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @mr cheney
you said soldiers die instantly, but in valkryie the guy in the beginning was right next to a bomb then less than a minute later he gets hurt because of the car blowing up. and how did he survive? i dont think that scene was true

    ReplyDelete
  45. Also this makes me apprecciate rememberance day morer because soldiers go into a war knowing they are going to die, and for our safety too

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ prabhjot miracles can happen maybe he survived also most of the others survived too, remember the scene when he gave out the badges or pins to the soldiers who were recovering.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @ Prabhjot. you're right these soldiers knew they're going to die with pride because they helped our nation one more step to freedom. Most people like me think that they have a hard life but when you compare with them they have the hard life. These soldiers have shown real courage.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I liked the beginning of Valkyrie. I liked it because they show a story or a mission to kill Adolf Hitler that I never Knew about. Also, this was interesting because I never knew that the German's tried to kill him even after promising to the essential oath. I liked the part when the guy wrote about his plan and opinions in his journal. This made me think that at least one person knows that Adolf Hitler is leading Germany in the wrong direction. BACKROUND KNOWLEDGE. Assassinating his own race just because they are disabled or sick or not the right eye colour is extremely cruel. I mean he doesn't even have blonde hair and blue eyes. Unfortunately, the German's bought his promise but never thought it through.
This reminds me of the quote we did: "People by into the ________________. I forgot but I think it meant that people by into the person before the promise and ideas they have. This is what happened to the German citizens and he was smart to do that because this happened right after the great depression. That means people had no money, banks were literally closed. So this lead to desperateness. Thus, Hitler was smart enough to buy his people's votes to anything he says, he has waited patiently and acted to his best time. He wanted Germany to be the ultimate nation. He had it all set up or planed for not just 20 years but, 150 years. By time, his army grew and grew to be come dominate, that's when nobody could of stopped him.

  49. Saving Pirate Ryan was an interesting movie, at least the first 5 minutes of it. I liked it very much because I felt like I was actually in the navy. Mr.Cheney was right. Soldier's death is not dramatic, their lives can be gone in a split second. I really never knew that. Now I have more appreciation about Remembrance Day. I never took 30 minutes actually taking my time to think about them and their courageous sacrifices.n I learned a lot this year. Now my perspective of War has changed to more deeper thoughts because of watching this movie.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ aqib don't you mean Valkyrie.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think Saving Private Ryan was very intense but it definatly opened my eyes to how fast death is and movies always make it look slow and peaceful. Valkyrie was very informative and real I learned what many soliders had to do to be safe.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Great observations, and yes the scene at the beginning at Valkyrie where teh character played by Tom Cruise may be over dramatized, but he did indeed lose his eye and hand in battle.

@ Janat the movie Valkyrie is based in the true events of World war 2

@Abeeshan, this is your best performance on the Blog thus far this year, this is level 4 blogging.

As well I'm glad many of you take time to appreciate the sacrifices of war a bit more now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Valkyrie was very interesting it was really relistic and as Mr.Cheney was saying they didn't have any last words they just died instantly. Death was certain at moments like this. Yes this does impact the way I think about rememberance day because now it makes me want to think beyond just saving the countries and freedom. Watching this movie/video made me think one step ahead and made me feel how the soldiers felt espacially when the soldiers where drowning and how the camera was moving like your actually one of them. Watching this movie made me have deeper thoughts about what rememberance day really is about.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @abeeshan exactly it isn't like how on tv it shows the death is all dramtic and they have a chance to give something to someone or say something that will enourage everyone like their last words, but all this doesn't really take place in the real world like if your thinking death is all dramatic your thinking on your island you have to really step out f there and experiance it like i kinda did while i watched the movie. It was all so realistic, it actually seemed like it was taking place right now.

    ReplyDelete
  55. @prabhjot that is true once your there, there is no way out like if you dive in water and think you'll be safe there guess what YOUR WRONG! because you never know when someone will blast a bomb in the water or anything! there is no place to hide in war. War is kind of like a trap once your in your never going out!

    ReplyDelete
  56. @Mr.Cheney ~ sorry for not blogging that's because me and neha were just finishing up the wreath for tomm.

  57. Valkyrie was a very good movie for so far the 5-10 minutes we watched. I found that this movie wasn’t really straight to the point as Saving Private Ryan because in Valkyrie they had a lot of talking and slowly they went unlike Saving Private Ryan they went straight to the point shooting and bomb blasting people being torn apart it was very disturbing but I’m really looking forward to watching the rest of the movie. These movies make us get more into war it makes us get the feel of how war actually is, pictures don’t give the real visualization..... Visualization is how u can get the actual feel the actual visualization. The more we see the more we understand soldiers don’t risk their lives they RISK THEIR LIVES it make a big deal when actually seeing it and really to tell the truth I find Saving Private Ryan a better movie Valkyrie because Saving Private Ryan may be very violent or very disturbing but really it gives the feel. Valkyrie it’s ok but it doesn’t show about the others it just shows about one person which was like not even 5-10 minutes long Saving Private Ryan had everyone in it showed how people have nowhere to go except die or go under water and die what other option, the movie didn’t have timing they had out of the blue moon and boom. Bombs exploded and people went flying in the air now that was very disturbing but what’s the real feel with nothing real.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think saving private Ryan was interesting, and quite horrorful.
The look on the soldier's faces; mostly sad, in terror, or shock.
They were also vomiting getting sea sick, and throwing up at the fact that they may die.
The soldiers had no safe place to hide. Even in water they were shot and killed.

The red sea looked quite terrifying, and people's legs and heads and other body parts blowing off is quite scary, and very bloody.

Valkyrie was also very interesting, and quite engaging.
I felt a shiver going up watching both films because the camera made me think I was there, and my life was in danger.
I felt very bad for the soldiers, and I have also learned that death is very quick and wont happen slowly.

It has changed the way I think about Rememberance day because I feel wen more sadness about soldiers dying for our lives, and our freedom.
I always respected Rememberance day, but now I respect it even more.

    Sorry I didn't post before...
    A very late start.

    ReplyDelete
  59. @Sonali: which movie did u find the most disturbing? Remembrance day and war is just beyond freedom and saving countries as i re-quote in your paragraph i don't quite understand that because what comes beyond then just that? risking lives?

    ReplyDelete
  60. @Word nerd: it felt terrifying to the people but my question is they went out and joined the army to help save people’s lives they risked their OWN lives to save others THEY CHOSE TO GO OUT AND HELP...so do you think they should really be scared?? because before taking the stand they should have thought about them if they go and died cause they can't handle it what is the point really? I’m not trying to be rude to any solider they all have worked hard and I respect all that they have done

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Mr.Cheney: 1st of all sorry for the very late start.
2nd: yes it was over dramatized Tom Cruz did loose his eye and hand but compared to a bomb being next to you or under you then all of a sudden kaboom your in the air and your head is half torn or something, u have no place to go except underwater u jump in but there is no point cause you got shot under water I'm pretty sure Saving Private Ryan is more then...

    ReplyDelete
  62. @Shelby: yes is did show they needed to be safe but as Mr.Cheney said don’t you think it’s to over dramatize? Because they had all of the talking in it they made it a movie it was no longer the war going on. What do you really think Valyrike was made in to a movie like all the others or is it one of a kind?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Saving private Ryan is a great movie when you want to talk about how they fought war. I've already watched saving private Ryan so yeah it only has a few sceans when they aren't in the war and those sceans are only a few seconds/minutes. Vakyrie was good in the beginning it was a smart idea to put the explosives in the bottle because they wouldn't have anywhere to throw it because they were in the plane. I enjoy saving private Ryan better.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Watching the second part of Valkyrie, there was a lot of discussion in it but i have one question. When the main character was his family, what was happening??Like was it a war tank or army force ???I couldn't tell what was happening

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Janat, it was air bombing, the type of bombing that is shown in the picture of Berlin in a previous post. Bombing was common and nightly during the war.

    ReplyDelete
  66. and yes a lot of chatter today in the film, but essential for setting up the assassination attempt and the attempted takeover of Berlin.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Going to start watching Saving Private Ryan right now!

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Mrcheney i forgot my TCI form at skool shoud i just get a note from my parents saying i can go and have there signature down

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes,that's perfect, great to see the super genius back on the blog after weeks away!!!! bbuuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sting like a beeeeeeeeeeeeee

    ReplyDelete
  70. @ neha what I meant was that watching the movie made me think futher than just saving countries and freedom it made me think about what soldiers go through for us. I meant it made me think about them risking their lives. They know that they are risking their lives but they don't seem to care beczuse right now all that matters to them is the innocent people who died.

I didn't find any of the movies that disturbing, they were quite releastic though.

    ReplyDelete
  71. @abeeshan
but look, getting bombed and shot by a jet, plus being in a car that blew up, thats not realistic if the only thing that happened was he lost a fingr and a eye. im pretty sure if that happened he would be disabled or killed or something more than what actuall happened

    ReplyDelete
  72. @prabhjot ya but sometimes you don't get fully diabled sometimes things only affect parts of your body not your whole body............

    ReplyDelete
  73. @ mr cheney
do you know which country was air bombing germany, in that scene

    ReplyDelete
  74. @ sonali
my bad i meant to say what you just sayed.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @ abeeshan
also if someone got hit by a car they would be disabled, but if a car blew up on them they shoul get a major injury

    ReplyDelete
  76. @ mr cheney
in saving private ryan malav told me that canada stormed the othe side of the beach so were the americans and canadians fighting together?

    ReplyDelete
  77. and the British at Normandy

it was the allies that were bombing German cities, American, Canadian, British fighters

    ReplyDelete
  78. @ Mr.Cheney
When are we going to finish Valkyrie? Also are we gonna do some other things to regarding to war?

    ReplyDelete
  79. We will watch 30 min everyday till we are done, we should take two more classes and thus be done on Wednesday.

War related activities, will be a conclusion to the film and continuing the narrative writing piece we started.

  82. The videos that we watched and now watching it has strong detail and Are very interesting it has many things I didn't know that happens during a war. The D- day invasion was very disturbing but also I see it happening to all the soldiers when they were on the boat and they were vomiting because they knew that they wouldn't live. I learn death is fast you wouldn't have any moments like how we see on tv when you get shoot your dead. This helps me understand more what remembrance day is for and why we do it every year we remember the soldiers who fought for us who fought for are country and for freedom every remembrance day we respect the ones who lost there lives for people who they didn't know it's were the bright red poppies grow.
