  1. I think this quote means that, big people or things that are now big have had support from people or things that are small in the past. Like Steve Jobs the creator and inventor of the Apple's Snow Leopard operating system, imagine he was one of those big doors now the things that supported him to make Apple were laptop, a basement, and parents who didn't have money to send him to college, but they did anyways. Those are the hinges those are the things that support him, helped him when he needed help. I cant put on a door if there is no hinges can I?

I indeed agree with this because it's a true fact. Nothing can stand, swing or gravitate without force and support. Even the religion of Islam is based on pillars, not 1 but 5 pillars make it so strong. Even words have to have support I cannot stand up in class and say "Mr.Cheney that's wrong" and sit back down, I have to explain why it's wrong, I have to justify. Explaining why you said a specific thing is the hinges and the specific thing you said is the door.

William Clement Stone is a very successful businessman, whom's father had died at the age of 3. His gambling losses were left a problem for the family. He started off selling newspapers and and gradually made millions. I think he meant that big things will grow from little things they will blossom from them. He probably meant the same as me that every big person or thing has had support from little people or things, even a design for a blackberry was innovated from the shape of a specific rock.

  2. i think this quote means big opportunities come even at the worst times.

i agree with this quote because when things are looking bad, there will always be a bright side that will cheer you up, and give you more opportunities.

    W. Clement Stone was a business man, philanthropist and the author of the book New Thought.

i think he was thinking about all the struggles he had to go through in life, but still became a very successful person.

  5. 1.I didn't understand what this quote meant until on the internet i found this the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. So my understanding to this is how big or small your goal is if you set your mind to it , it for sure is achievable. For example JUSTIN BIEBER! He was a young 12 year boy that started singing and posted videos on YouTube now he’s a pop star sensation! He has achieved so much that someone at the age of 50 hasn't achieved yet. Justin has done 546 concerts worldwide. He has 1 book, and 1 movie and hes only now 17!

2.yes i do agree because if someone young as Justin was able to do it why cant someone else.Justin was a young boy living in Stratford, Ontario with his grandparents and mom and now hes a huge sensation with 8 million fans. If u really believe it can happen. Justin's dad left him and Justin's mom when he was only 10 months and W. Clement Stones father died when he was only 3 and now look at W. Clement Stone and Justin .D. Bieber they both reached out and believed and they are really far in life.

3 W. Clement Stone is a business man ,philanthropist and New Thought self-help book author. His father died at left him when Stone was just 3.His family was broke after his father leaving because of his gambling losses. At the age of just 13 he owned his own newsstand and now today he was able to contribute up to $10 MILLION to President Richard Nixon's election campaigns in 1968 and 1972.What a big difference a young boy made.He was trying to say just cause his father passed away and they were poor didn't mean in life he couldn't be big and strong. He was able to get his diploma from the Young Men's Christian Association Central High School in Chicago even though he dropped out of high school.Basically you have to have faith in yourself and if u do put your most effort and all your strength and one day you will be someone that will stand far and tall

  7. There's a lot more to this quote then just work hard, its believe, have faith and trust. Believe, have faith and trust in everything you say and do and feel what u think is right for you. There will be sacrifices but just hold on tight and walk down that railway track.

  10. 1) At first I restated the quote, I thought "Big things are controlled by little things" because of W. Clement Stone's example of big door's being moved by little hinges. But, i wouldn't agree with my example, the rich being controlled by the poor.
What I think "Big doors swing on little hinges" means is that little things can amount big things. Maybe W. Clement Stone was trying to say that its a fact. Big things are originated from little things. What he meant was that the "big things" are the people high in power, and almost every powerful/successful/wealthy person was once a "little thing" as in a low class/average/poor person.

2)I find it a correct statement, (based on my own thought of it's meaning) because of how many biographies I read of famous people that started with their childhood being difficult or filled with struggles, either financially or even emotionally. But at the end they all found a way to get themselves together, and ended up being really successful. It is true, big doors do swing on little hinges.

    3) W. Clement Stone was a businessman, a philanthropist and a book author. When I read W. Clement Stone's biography it was the same ind of biography as most famous people, when he was a teenager he only made $100 a week, later on in his life he started making millions! His quote was based on his and many other wealthy people's experience in life.

  11. think about this...can a big door swing effectively on small hinges?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think this quote means that big things come in small packages. Just like teachers giving assignments and a student isn't doing well in school, but then gets an A.

I agree because what Donna said was that he only made 100 dollars a week but as he went on in life he gained more and more, but now he earns millions. He is the "Small Hinge" and the Responsibility of doing his work properly is the "Big Door"

    W. Clement Stone started business because of gambling losses and he started his own business by selling newspaper in restaurants. He was so sucessful he turned his $100 a week into millions. W. Clement Stone contributed 10 Million to Richard Nixon's election campaigns.
Its based on the other rich people he has worked with.

  13. @Mr.Cheney it can but you will have to try really hard. With out the power it wont be able to swing but if u put the ability, the strength and your hope it can and it might.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @ mrcheney
so you would really have to try hard to get it to open.
so it means to be successful you have to work hard,
and put all your might into everything you do so that you can do great things.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @mrcheney
they may swing effectively but not as effective as bigger hinges. But if you were to survey the successful people of today's world they had to spend hours and hours practicing what they want to be. Like Derek Jeeter He spent most of his young life playing baseball. And now look where he is Rookie of the year award, five golden gloves, four Silver Slugger, All star MVP, World Series MVP. And this wouldn't all happen if his grandparents hadn't let him go to the ball game, if he dropped out off high school baseball. I consider these hinges, all the help he got to become one of the worlds best baseball players were really small acts of kindness and his efforts.

  16. @The Sauce Boss: good thinking its makes a lot of sense to the quote

  17. @Mr.Cheney
There would be a smaller chance of becoming successful when starting off rich. (Rich from good choice career) But not if that person had a talent. (Talent/passion for something like singing)

Now let me explain, you see 80% of people around the world are living in poverty, so most likely people in poverty will have that talent, but the other 20% who are rich will not have as many people. They may buy themselves into success for their passion, but wont get as far as the people who were "born to be."

    I would say no.
Yes, In some cases big doors can swing effectively on big hinges. (Wealthy people can become famous/even more successful)
But in most cases big doors usually swing more effectively on smaller hinges. (That 80% of people can become successful and wealthy)

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Donna
So your saying if you start off rich you have a smaller chance of being talented?

  19. 1.I think that this quote means that Big things now have affect from a couple small things in the past. For example, Stephen Harper. He had to work really hard to get to university, then also to get into the government. So in this case, learning was/is one of his small things that he had to do to be what he is today.
2.Yes I do believe in this because you always must do something before you get you grand prize. If it's practice or studying you must do some small steps before you take bigger steps.
3.W.Clement Stone was a businessman and a philanthropist. He had a tough childhood of selling papers to people because of his fathers Gambling problem. His father died when he was 3 years of age. He was a very smart student and got into Detroit Collage of Law and into Northwestern University. I think that he is talking about that you must do some steps to get something big.

    ReplyDelete
  20. this means little efforts may become big results because the little things people do now comes out to become big things so if you do good things now later on you will be succsessful.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 2.yes i completely do because your future is based on now your growing years

    ReplyDelete
  22. 3.stone has an insurance company he was poor in the beginning he started to do these little things which was good and later on he was successful in life which is why he made the quote. “Big doors swing on little hinges”

    ReplyDelete
  23. @am17
To add to what you said If we sacrifice our time now to take steps to be successful such as studying and working hard in school. If that sacrifice is made now we will enjoy the fruits and the blessings of it later. Buying the seed from the store then planting it then waiting and watering it and waiting until it blossoms and you can enjoy the fruits of it then, for a very long time.

  26. i think this quote means that the big things have to have support of small things. So now if you start doing small things you will achieve your goal.

yes i do, because in the future years, it will help alot. for example, if you didnt have much money to pay for college, and you graduated from high school, it would help alot to get a summer job to shave off some of that cash

Clement stone was poor in his early years, he did little things to help get money for his family, this payed off because eventually this money helped him pay for his college. which explains the quote"big doors swing on little hinges"

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think this quote means that if you start off with scratch you'll end up sucessfull. It's like little bricks put together to make a house then a mansion. All I'm trying to say is that everything had to start from the beginning. You won't see now but then in the future you'll see all your accomplishments. Like Abraham Lincoln

I truly believe in this quote. You always have to work for what you want putting you're full effort is essential.

Clement Stone and his family was poor because their dad died and had gambling issues. He made a new stand and now it has become really famous. I think he said this quote because he was talking about his past life which leads to the quote " big doors need little hinges" .

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Mr Cheney
I think some big doors can swing on small hinges, but you must keep in mind wat the door is made of.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Tabish
20% of the world has a smaller chance then 80%. The rich can buy themselves into stardom but wont get as far as the 80% that probably has the talent.

  31. @prabojot:so your saying big people as in older age or as in bigger people in life like rich or people that have gotten far in life?? because if big things have to have support of small things then big people support little people??

    ReplyDelete
  32. Another idea comes to my mind (thanks to Lisa)
What I think this quote means is that the big doors are the singers/artists in this generation. The small hinges are us. (the people that listen to the music) The artists need our support to make money, the artist depends on us just like doors swing on hinges.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Donna
But the other 20% of the world don't have as many resouces as the 80%.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Donna
Don't you think that artists also need help from other people not only us, because first you must be discovered by some producer, or even youtube. Unless you come from some famous family, we are the second "layer" to help those singers/artists.

    ReplyDelete
  35. i think this quote means that every big success has a support to it and no matter how big or small that without a support you cant stand up and the example that clement stone gave was that a door can only open and close if the hinges would give support or else the door wouldnt be able to even stand up.

at first clement stone was a poor family because of his dad preferrring to gamble and his dad died. clement started selling news papers which gave him a good start. soon he became a successful buissness man. we can take his family as the door and the way he started selling news papers as the hinges. in conclusion clement stone had support from selling news papers and that made him lead to becoming a buissness man or else he would be still living in a poor family.

    ReplyDelete
  36. actually
80% of the world lives on less then $10 a day.
The other 20% are living average or wealthy.
Crazy isn't it? But think about all those third world countries.

What i assume is that about half of that 80% arent living in extreme poverty and are living in a country with resources.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Olga
Very true, there can be a higher chance for those fortunate ones to become famous but i think we can judge wether that person has talent or not. So we are the judges of those people's sucess. we are the small hinges controling the big doors

    ReplyDelete
  38. @The Sauce Boss
There are 39.2 contries which are rich and wealthy. Go look... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:First_second_third_worlds_map.svg

  39. I think thus quote means that big things always start off small. For example Michael Jackson who grew up in a 3 bedroom home with 10 brothers and sisters in Indiana he started off competing in small singing competions in this town but later grew up to be the KING OF POP.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think this quote means that big people and big things is supported by the smallest things. For example A Billionaire's and like our body being a big thing is supported by small things like cells which are miniscule and without those small components the big component is no more.So without those hinges there would be an important component of the door left out that wont let the door function.

I do agree because infact this wuote is very true,Beccause if you think about it like what i said in my explanation the door wont be able to function or we wont be ablo to bea live without cells they might be small but they make a big difference in the whole working of the body.

    W. Clement Stone's father died when he was 3, leaving the family impoverished because of his gambling losses. At the age of 6, Stone began hawking newspapers on Chicago's South Side, while his mother worked as a dressmaker. At 13, he owned his own newsstand.[1]

At the age of 16, Stone went to Detroit to help his mother in the insurance agency she had opened there. He went from office to office, making cold calls (he called them gold calls) to sell casualty insurance, and he was soon making $100 a week.

One of his favorite expressions when describing his cold calling and sales abilities was that he "...Mowed them down". He devoured the Horatio Alger stories, where poor boys overcome adversity to make good.[1]

Stone dropped out of high school to concentrate on selling insurance. He eventually received a diploma from the Young Men's Christian Association Central High School in Chicago. The remainder of his formal education consisted of a few courses at Detroit College of Law and Northwestern University. At first, the managers of restaurants tried to discourage him from this practice, but he gradually won them over, due in part to his politeness, charm, persistence and the fact that by and large, the patrons of the restaurants had no objection to this new way of selling his newspapers.

From there he graduated to selling insurance policies very successfully in the offices of downtown businesses. His mother was the initiator of his new career, and together they did quite well, she as the manager of the business, and he as the salesperson.Stone ran $100 into millions with a strong desire to succeed and by putting into practice the principles in the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.[1][3][4] He was the living example of the proverbial rags-to-riches protagonist in Horatio Alger's stories he loved so much. Eventually he became an 'angel' to others lifting some from the gutter, to incredible heights. One of his great successes was the famed Og Mandino, an alcoholic at the time whom Stone took under his wing. The relationship engendered a new life for Mandino who became the publisher of Success Magazine at the time.

But still take in mind Ke$ha. She came from a very poor family and didnt really do much with her "Talent". The thing that she did was a mistake when she walked in Flo Rida's studio and he told her tio sing with him. So you dont always have to be rich to become famous, sometimes it is just luck.

  42. 1)i think this quote means thtat something big like martin luther king jr he started with the past life of mahatma gandhi who inspired him to did what he wanted to do.Martin luther king jr used his nonviolent teachings to make his speech about blacks and whites. The inspired teachings is like the hinges and what martin luther king jr did was the big door.the door that was big needed the hinges to make it happen a door needs hinges(like a turning point) to swing open.

2)i agree because without the support(the hinges) the door would have just been there it wouldnt swing open.

3)i think he is talking about if you what to do something big about you might or might not need hinges (support)to carry on.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i do agree with this because everyone needs to start off small to make it big and without the support of others they wouldnt be recognized

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think this quote means that big people or big things were once small. They started of small then gradually got larger (successful.) Small joys can turn into big joys. Small people work hard and eventually become some one big. They work hard with effort, strenght, trust, hope and believe.

I agree with this quote because you have to put your best in your life and try to work it out.

W.Clement Stone was a businessman, philanthropist, and New Thought self-help book author. I think what he means by this quote is that you have to work hard to achieve your goal. This is only the beggining and later on in life you will have to face alot of problems. I think he wrote this quote based on his life of struggles.

    ReplyDelete
  45. ithink this post means that theres a suort to every big or successful thing. i think this because a door can only swing if there are hinges, no door can give u an enterance easily without hinges. no matter how small or big the hinges are they do the hinges job. like no other thing can replace hinges and still give u an enterance without the door swinging on the hinges.

clement stone had a poor family because of his dad gambling and unfortunatlly he died. but clement stone didnt give up. he sold news papers and other small things to make his living. soon he became a very successful buissness man but only because he had his news paper/other job(S). so if clement didnt have that job him self and his family would be still poor. in conclution clement stone was the door that had no support from the hinges until he found a starting money maker to be successsful.

i know that clement stone must have had alot of difficulties throughout his un-successful years. isay this because to get to a spot u want to be in is very hard. in the reality u cant just think or dream that im ganna be in this possition, u have to work for it because giving no effrt wont make ur goal successful or u wont improve, ull just be at the point u started at. clement stone started selleing news papers which was a very good start. also he was poor so he had no good facillities to improve his start. every person goes 24/7 for a goal if it means to them. like some famillies want their child to be successful not a failure. clement stone never gave up thinking "im poor wat could i do in this possition?"

i agree with this quote because evryone has support. right now in our life our parents/family are our support because without any facillities we are nothing.
